Robert Biggers plays drums. Lincoln Sward plays bass. Dave Cantwell plays drums. David Harper plays guitar. Zeke Graves plays synthesizers.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Six names, a double up on the rhythm section, a side of synthesizer and that&#8217;s it.\u00c2\u00a0 One listen to the band&#8217;s latest record, 2010&#8217;s <em>Jam<\/em><em>\u00c3\u00b3n<\/em>, you know it&#8217;s not.\u00c2\u00a0 This music isn&#8217;t simple,\u00c2\u00a0 so much as heavy, distorted, meditative, impulsive, noisy, syncopated.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a barrage of words clamoring to define a band that throws in equal parts cerebral focus and improvisational wit to make music that defies genre, but leans on the dynamic local scene.\u00c2\u00a0 And you can catch them in full celebration of that and all things <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/intheyearofthepig\">In the Year of the Pig<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopscotchmusicfest.com\">Hopscotch Fest<\/a> this Saturday night at <a href=\"http:\/\/berkeleycafe.net\/\">The Berkeley Cafe.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now just the five hardest questions in faux business:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. If your band were a pork product, which would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3527\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3527\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/chipmillard.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/23\/hot-dog-1-pauls-place-famous-hot-dogs-in-rocky-point-north-carolina\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3527\" title=\"Paul's Place style hotdogs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Picture-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Picture-4.png 227w, https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Picture-4-70x80.png 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/strong><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo source: Chip Millard&#39;s weblog<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;  I don&#8217;t know what kind of pork product we would be, but we do take  great pleasure in investigating the full range of culinary possibilities  available with the noble beast.<br \/>\nRecently we have been exploring regional hot dog styles. \u00c2\u00a0We made our first trip to\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chipmillard.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/23\/hot-dog-1-pauls-place-famous-hot-dogs-in-rocky-point-north-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paul&#8217;s Place in Rocky Point, NC<\/a> a couple months ago. \u00c2\u00a0Very enjoyable. \u00c2\u00a0 Perfecting home preparations of both the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=106366080\" target=\"_blank\">Sonoran Dog<\/a> and\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barrypopik.com\/index.php\/new_york_city\/entry\/slaw_dog_slaw_dawg_slawdog_slawdawg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Carolina Slaw Dog<\/a> styles has been a fantastic journey as well.<\/p>\n<p>Tip of the hat to\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/emilync\/4669742783\/in\/set-72157624080951873\/\" target=\"_blank\">Skeenie&#8217;s Hot Dogs<\/a> in West Virginia too.<br \/>\nWe  profess no allegiance to either Eastern or Lexington style barbecue,  choosing instead to keep our hearts open and our minds clear of  distraction.<\/p>\n<p>We  also stand by Diana Kennedy&#8217;s technique of preparing carnitas at home,  however, the confit method recently proposed by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt  certainly merits some investigation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. When did the idea to form In the Year of the Pig come up? (aka How&#8217;d you guys get started playing together?)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; \u00c2\u00a0There is an origin story comic book, illustrated by Chicago silkscreen artist\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alamoigloo.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Keith G. Herzik<\/a>,  that is available at our shows. \u00c2\u00a0Email if you want one but don&#8217;t want  to see a show. \u00c2\u00a0The name came from an infatuation with a 1968  documentary film about the Vietnam War by\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0064482\/\" target=\"_blank\">Emile de Antonio<\/a>, highly recommended. \u00c2\u00a0We started  in 2005 because we had a good name that needed using, a very nice  landlord, and upstairs neighbors who were friendly folklorists.  \u00c2\u00a0Essentially we had a place to practice, a very, very supportive local  music community, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fvrec.com\/unstableensemble\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nightlight<\/a>.  \u00c2\u00a0It seemed silly not to take advantage of it and play some music. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s  grown over the years from the original duo of Bear and Fox to the  current six-piece of Aaron Smithers, David Harper, Dave Cantwell,  Lincoln Sward, Robert Biggers, and Zeke Graves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Describe your typical band practice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7:30 PM: arrive early and head over to Tienda Don Jose for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.topochico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Topo Chico<\/a> and a 32 oz. Carta Blanca.<br \/>\n7:45 PM: sit in alley and discuss world events as other folks arrive.<br \/>\n8:00 PM: get stuff inside and see what equipment is broken this week.<br \/>\n8:15 PM: Cantwell leads a brief service.<br \/>\n8:20 PM: break.<br \/>\n8:27 PM: tuning.<br \/>\n8:30 PM: jams.<br \/>\n9:00 PM: more jams.<br \/>\n9:30 PM: even more jams.<br \/>\n10:00 PM: maybe even more jams.<br \/>\n10:15 PM: discussion that maybe we really are just a jam band.<br \/>\n10:30 PM: David Harper distributes theory worksheet for homework with a firm hand and serious countenance.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong> <\/strong>4.
