{"id":3901,"date":"2010-12-06T11:41:30","date_gmt":"2010-12-06T16:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/?p=3901"},"modified":"2010-12-17T09:40:26","modified_gmt":"2010-12-17T14:40:26","slug":"a-guide-to-eating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/2010\/12\/a-guide-to-eating\/","title":{"rendered":"A GUIDE TO EATING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/eater1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/eater1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"eater1\" width=\"200\" height=\"77\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3924\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Again with the trucks<\/strong><br \/>\nIf 2010 has shown us anything, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s that the food truck is not a flash-in-the-pan phenom.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nCarrboro, which has enjoyed the mainly Latino fare offered for many years, has recently experienced the same kind of diversification of mobile eateries as Durham, a town where the occasional food truck rodeos draw scores of vendors of wide variety.<br \/>\nIf you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been in downtown Carrboro lately, you may have noticed the lines growing longer at the latest addition to the local fleet \u00e2\u20ac\u201c this one devoted to those mini-burgers known affectionately as sliders.<br \/>\nSlippin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Sliders, a burger truck business run by Josie Shrum and Amy Davis, has been steadily developing a following since starting weekly visits to Carrboro this fall.<br \/>\nDavis, a 1998 graduate of Chapel Hill High who went through Alamance Community College\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s culinary program, said business has been brisk at the truck whenever they open up at their regular weekend spot in the parking lot of Cliff\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Meat Market.<br \/>\nThe pair buy all their meat from Cliff\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and their vegetarian fare from the State Farmers Market near the truck\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s home commissary in Raleigh.<br \/>\nThe menu is varied and includes occasional specials like shrimp po-boys along with a variety of sides for the sliders. Davis says the Carrboro crowd has been partial to the West Coast Burger, which is a combination of ground brisket and sirloin served with bacon and a Cajun remoulade, and the Diablo Burger, which features, among other things, caramelized jalapenos.<br \/>\nDavis and Shrum are scheduled to slide back into town this Friday, starting at the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Velveeta\u00e2\u20ac\u009d art opening at Wootini Gallery and then heading over to Cliff\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s for the duration of the evening.<br \/>\nAs with many of the mobiles, you can keep up with Slippin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Sliders\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 schedule through Twitter, at <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/slippinsliders\">twitter.com\/slippinsliders<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<strong>Border provocation<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the ongoing touting of the glaring food truck imbalance between Carrboro and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s larger neighbor directly to the east, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be another Food Truck Showcase in the parking lot of Al\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Garage in the border region between the two downtowns.<br \/>\nFeatured at the Dec. 4 showcase will be Captain Ponchos Tacos, Parlez Vous Crepe, Carrboro Raw and an Indian food truck. The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<strong>NYT hearts RTP (again)<\/strong><br \/>\nCongrats to Sam Suchoff and Chapel Hill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own The Pig for getting a big kiss of ink as part of the recent \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Axis of Cool\u00e2\u20ac\u009d article in the New York Times Magazine.<br \/>\nThe article, one of the Gray Lady\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s many recent nods to the food and arts cultures of the Triangle, also touts the awesome goodness of Only Burger, the much-loved mobile burger-and-fries operation that opened a stationary location in Hope Valley Square in mid-November.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<strong>Sausage  wagoneers<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/farmhandfoods.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FarmhandFoods1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"FarmhandFoods\" width=\"200\" height=\"126\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3904\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FarmhandFoods1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FarmhandFoods1-120x75.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nCarrboro\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own Jennifer Curtis, who has been an organizer in the farm-to-fork movement, has started a new enterprise called Farmhand Foods, with the aim of connecting local livestock growers and food lovers of the Triangle.<br \/>\nAnd, yes, a food truck is involved, specifically a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Sausage Wagon\u00e2\u20ac\u009d serving handcrafted sausages. The wagon makes its debut at 3 Cups on Dec. 9 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. serving sausages paired with seasonal wines. Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/farmhandfoods.com\/\">farmhandfoods.com<\/a> for more info.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<strong>Small farmers get a break<\/strong><br \/>\nPut a parenthetical \u00e2\u20ac\u0153maybe\u00e2\u20ac\u009d after the above headline, but there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s at least some hope that the new food-safety legislation won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be the nightmare for small growers that many have anticipated.<br \/>\nSen. Kay Hagan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s office recently announced that the North Carolina Dem has been able to win approval for an amendment to the legislation, which aimed at strengthening the Food and Drug Administration\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ability to conduct food-safety inspections and conduct product recalls. Under the amendment, small producers will continue to be regulated at the state and local level.
