The Archers were the greatest rock band of the \u00e2\u20ac\u212290s. The prodigal sons of the Replacements without being drunken messes. Pavement for thinking people. Photo courtesy of Gorman Bechard <\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThat pretty much sums up why, after seeing the legendary local band for two reunion shows in Los Angeles, filmmaker Gorman Bechard approached his favorite band about doing a documentary. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Perfect Time<\/strong><br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to do one of those delving documentaries, so I said, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcPeople have lost what rock \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 roll is. Let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s capture what a real rock \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 roll band should be on stage for the next generation.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>His argument was compelling enough for the band to agree. Photo courtesy of Gorman Bechard<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe resulting work is called <em>What Did You Expect?<\/em>, after one of the band\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s singles. Shot by six different camera operators, the film captures the action from many angles \u00e2\u20ac\u201c stage right and left, on the catwalk, over the drummer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shoulder, in the audience and one freelancer roaming around. If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been to an Archers show, you know it would take that many cameras to document it all.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This film feels like you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re leaning up against the stage, maybe you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve had too many drinks, with people pounding at your back, and you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know who to focus on,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he relates. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Oh, and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s loud.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Into The Light<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is the second rock-umentary for Bechard, who\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also known for his narrative features (<em>Friends with Benefits<\/em>) and a novel (<em>The Second Greatest Story Ever Told<\/em>). His first project in the genre was <em>Color Me Obsessed, A Film About The Replacements<\/em>. That set the stage for the Archers film and his upcoming doc, <em>Every Everything, The Music, Life &#038; Times of Grant Hart<\/em>, the singer-songwriter-drummer of the iconic \u00e2\u20ac\u212280s rock band H\u00c3\u00bcsker D\u00c3\u00bc. That film will be more of a narrative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Word<\/strong><br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Since the Archers broke up I haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t seen a band I truly loved live with that kind of energy,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Bechard relates. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Matt [Gentling, bassist] hasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t aged \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I think he drank some vampire blood or something. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know how someone that age moves like that. The power was there.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nAnd now it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s on film for fans to revel in and the new generation to study.<\/p>\n<p>What Did You Expect <em>had its world premier at Canada\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s version of South by Southwest on June 14. Its U.S. debut will be, appropriately enough, back at the Cradle on July 7.
