What follows are their comments unvarnished.<\/p>\n<p>Brunson Hoole, managing editor,<br \/>\nAlgonquin Books<\/p>\n<p><a href='http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedbonk-book-cover.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedbonk-book-cover.jpg\" width=\"67\" height=\"100\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><em>Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex<\/em> by Mary Roach<br \/>\nMary Roach, the author of Stiff: The Curious Life of Human Cadavers, infectiously combines humor and science to explore all manner of sex research. That we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve spent so much time and effort studying animals to learn about our own sexuality speaks volumes about what strange creatures we are.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Deptford Trilogy<\/em> by Robertson Davies<br \/>\nI first read this in high school, and the setting had me wondering, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Where the heck is this place?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d It certainly isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the U.S. or England. Oh, Canada! Yankees with manners. Davies was a scarily wise and skilled writer who knew how to entertain.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nSarah Dessen, author<\/p>\n<p><a href='http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedabstinence-book-cove.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedabstinence-book-cove.jpg\" width=\"75\" height=\"100\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><em>The Abstinence Teacher<\/em> by Tom Perrotta.<br \/>\nI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m a huge fan of Perotta\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s work, and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been saving this new one for this summer. He always gets whatever he takes on just right.<\/p>\n<p><em>Little Stalker<\/em> by Jennifer Belle. <a href='http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedlittle-stalker-book.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedlittle-stalker-book.jpg\" width=\"76\" height=\"100\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBelle\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s stuff is kind of dark, always quirky and usually hilarious. The dark side of chick lit.<\/p>\n<p><a href='http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedsweethearts-book-cov.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedsweethearts-book-cov.jpg\" width=\"66\" height=\"100\" align=\"left\"\/><\/a><em>Sweethearts<\/em> by Sara Zarr.<br \/>\nThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been a real explosion of great writing for teens in the last couple of years, and Zarr is among the best. Her first book, Story of a Girl, was nominated for a National Book Award.<\/p>\n<p>Erica Eisdorfer, author and manager of Bulls Head Bookshop<\/p>\n<p><em>Netherland<\/em> by Joseph O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Neill<a href='http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizednetherland-book-cove.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizednetherland-book-cove.jpg\" width=\"62\" height=\"100\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nStunning reviews drive desire! The story of a Dutch banker who falls under the thrall of NYC, this book has been about as well-received as possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href='http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedplague-of-doves-book.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedplague-of-doves-book.jpg\" width=\"75\" height=\"100\" align=\"left\"\/><\/a><em>The Plague of Doves<\/em> by Louise Erdrich<br \/>\nShe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a dang good storyteller. This book, about an unsolved murder near an Objibwe reservation, sounds ultimately like a family story.<\/p>\n<p><em>Palace of Desire<\/em> by Naguib Mahfouz<br \/>\nThe second in the grand family saga, The Cairo Trilogy. I read Palace Walk, the first, some years ago and can still smell the spices and hear the noise on the streets.<\/p>\n<p><a href='http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedamerican-earth-book.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/resizedamerican-earth-book.jpg\" width=\"62\" height=\"100\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><em>American Earth: Environmental Writing Since Thoreau<\/em>,  edited by Bill McKibben<br \/>\nThis gorgeous book \u00e2\u20ac\u201c acid-free paper, ribbon binding \u00e2\u20ac\u201c showcases an interesting assortment: Gore, Kingsolver, Joni Mitchell, Cesar Chavez, P.T.Barnum \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in short, a Prius-load of writings about this good land and our responsibility to it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cranford<\/em> by Elizabeth Gaskell<br \/>\nThis is my kind of beach read. And after the broadcast of the impossibly charming PBS series, ought one to resist? I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m looking forward to fully giving in.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Wallace, author<\/p>\n<p><em>Lolita<\/em> by Vladimir Nabokov<br \/>\nbecause it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s one of the best American novels ever written and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s by a Russian.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Making of a Story<\/em> by Alice LaPlante.<br \/>\nA great book about writing, how to write and why to write. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We did a little fishing this month, casting out a request to local authors and avid readers on what books they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re planning to delve into or recommend delving into during summer reading series.
