The water will still<br \/>\nbe safe for everyday use, including drinking and cooking, but some special customers<br \/>\nare advised to take precautions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Kidney dialysis patients and those who keep fish in ponds or tanks filled with<br \/>\ncounty water should take special precautions during this one-month period,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Roy<br \/>\nLowder, director of Chatham County Utilities.  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153These residents should treat county<br \/>\nwater to remove chlorine during this time or use alternative water sources.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Also, customers who pre-treat county water using their own processes, such as<br \/>\nfilters or softeners, should be aware of the temporary change and consult the<br \/>\nmanufacturer of their equipment for recommendations, Lowder added.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Typical customers will only notice a slight reduction in the odor and taste of<br \/>\nchlorine during this period,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Lowder said.<\/p>\n<p>The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources requires all<br \/>\nwater systems using \u00e2\u20ac\u0153chloramination\u00e2\u20ac\u009d treatment to stop the addition of ammonia for a<br \/>\none-month period each year.  Lowder said that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153taking this temporary measure<br \/>\nprovides an additional safeguard to prevent potential biological growth in the<br \/>\nsystem.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Chatham County Utilities uses both ammonia and chlorine in its disinfection process.<br \/>\nAmmonia is added to the water in a carefully regulated dose and reacts with the<br \/>\nchlorine to produce chloramines. This chloramination process ensures the safety of<br \/>\nthe water.<\/p>\n<p>Lowder said that the Utilities Department will also flush the water distribution<br \/>\nsystem during this period, which will speed up the disinfection process.
