Taiwan opposition selects candidate for president

TAIPEI, Taiwan (CNN) -- Taiwan's best-known pro-independence activist, Peng Ming-min, has been selected by the main opposition party as its candidate for president. The election, next March, will be the first time voters directly choose the president. Peng was jailed in the 1960s for advocating independence for Taiwan. He later lived abroad for more than 20 years, returning in 1992. China considers Taiwan to be a Chinese province and has said it would not rule out the use of military force if Taiwan declares independence.
