DARKNESS FALLS "WATCH" BY PAUL GLASER SHOOTING SCRIPT FADE IN: EXT. DANIEL'S HEAD Head of a male, 19 years of age. INT. DANIEL'S MIND All white with no objects in it. 4 "walls", floor and ceiling visible. DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE is standing with a gun in his hand. DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE (pissed off) I can't believe you. I should have done this a long time ago. I knew you would try to ruin things for me. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE (all-knowing) You're right, you should have. Now please, will you go ahead and do it already. Or are you going to sit here and talk about it all day. NARRATOR (v.o.) Freeze. As narrator says freeze the action stops moving and time stands still. NARRATOR Okay I bet you're all wondering what's going on. First of all, that's me right there. Yeah, the guy in all white... and actually... I'm kind of the guy in all black too. Figured it out yet... that's right. That's my conscience, fighting it out. Some really strange things were taking place in my life and I had to take control of them, of my life. It wasn't easy either. I know I couldn't have had the strength to do it if it weren't for the watch... wait I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me tell you how all this started, the watch, the fight, everything. FADE OUT FADE IN: EXT. GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE - SUN SETTING Well-kept nice looking, large house but not gigantic, with cars in driveway and cars parked in street. Family consisting of a mother, father, 2 boys and a girl has pulled up, and walks in through front door. INT. GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE - SUNSET The inside is conservative with a large clock in the main living room accompanied by art hanging and flowerpots around. No bright, loud colors are notable characteristics of the hallway and living room. The front door leads to living room, which leads to hallway, which leads to grandfather's bedroom. Somber family members, some more distraught than others can be seen throughout the house. INT. GRANDFATHER'S BEDROOM - SUNSET Wooden dressers and a full-sized bed raised to normal height. GRANDFATHER in bed surrounded by family on all sides and grandfather is lying down, propped naturally up with pillows supporting his body and can barely be seen because family members so densely surround him. NARRATOR (v.o.) There's my Aunt... and my Grandpa. GRANDFATHER (determined) I know I need to rest, but I need to speak with my grandson! DAUGHTER #1, JANE You need to rest papa. You can speak with Daniel tomorrow. GRANDFATHER (persistent) No I can't. I must speak... ELLI, Daniel's mother, interrupts him. ELLI Dad, How are you? GRANDFATHER (tired) I'm tired Elli. (positively) Is Daniel with you? ELLI Yeah Dad, why? GRANDFATHER I need to see him. ELLI Alright. (Out the door) Daniel! Your Grandfather would like to speak with you! Daniel runs in and practically jumps on his Grandfather. NARRATOR (v.o.) Look there I am. Aren't I cute? DANIEL GRANDPAAAAA! GRANDFATHER Hi Daniel. How are you? Grandfather looks up to his family members. GRANDFATHER I'm sorry everybody, but I'm going to need a second to speak with my grandson... in private. The room clears out, slowly. Daniel and Grandfather are left alone. GRANDFATHER Daniel you know I love you, right? DANIEL (knowingly) Yeah Grandpa. GRANDFATHER Good, I knew you did. I just wanted to make sure. Well Daniel, I am going away for a while to see your Grandmother. I probably won't see you for a long time. DANIEL What do you mean, Grandpa? GRANDFATHER You'll understand someday. Anyway Daniel, I wanted to give you something. Something I made. It took decades to create and one day, when you're older, you'll be able to appreciate it. Grandfather signals for Daniel to get him his box that is sitting on his night table. GRANDFATHER This watch. He removes a watch from his box. It is aged, but nice. not made from gold or any other goldish-looking metal. NARRATOR (v.o.) There it is, the watch, the source of all this turmoil. GRANDFATHER I constructed this watch with years of research and decades of traveling the globe looking for the parts necessary to complete it. Now that it's finally done, I'm too old to appreciate it. That's why I want you to have it. I hope it can bring you half the happiness you have brought me for the last 11 years. Grandfather hands watch over to Daniel. DANIEL Thanks Grandpa. Daniel hugs him. GRANDFATHER (serious) Now, Daniel this watch will bring you anything you want, but be careful with it. Now that you own it, you are responsible for its well-being. I mean if you don't take care of it, how are you going to be able to give it to your grandson? So take care of it, okay Daniel? DANIEL I love you, Grandpa. GRANDFATHER I love you too, Daniel. Daniel hugs Grandfather. FADE OUT TEN YEARS LATER. FADE IN: EXT. DANIEL'S HOUSE - DAY Daniel's House is 2-story and nice. INT. DANIEL'S ROOM Music and movie posters everywhere. Room is kind of dirty, but not a mess. Television in room is on, but muted with music playing in the background ("Strange" by R.E.M.) Daniel is sitting on his bed talking on the phone with friend from school. NARRATOR (v.o.) Okay, that's me 2 weeks ago, before my world got turned upside down. Wow, you know seeing myself now, it's like I'm a totally different person. Anyway, just watch what's about to happen. DANIEL So things didn't seem a little slow to you today in History 11? RICK Not really. History 11 always feels slow to me. Who knows. As Daniel listens to response he is messing with his yearbook, drawing a heart around a girl's picture. DANIEL I don't know, Rick. I know history always feels a little slow, but I'm serious. People seemed to be talking slower, walking slower, doing everything slower. I don't know. I must be going crazy. Whatever. So do you think I have a chance with Jackie? You know I think I saw her looking at me today in class. RICK I don't know dog. She is a little far out of your league, don't you think? DANIEL Hey, thanks for the encouragement. RICK You know what I mean. It's not you. It's her. That girl has got every guy in the world chasing her. I just don't know if you could grab her. I don't know, maybe you could. I just wouldn't bet my life savings on it. You have got to be the perfect guy to land her. DANIEL I could do it. I know I could. I just have to meet her, and then she'll realize that she likes me too. I just have to meet her. RICK As long as you believe. That's all that matters. I don't want to mess with you, but how do you know you like her so much? You don't even know her. DANIEL I just do. You remember when I was her lab partner in chemistry that one time last year, I just felt something. RICK Hey, that's borderline stalker material. "I saw her through a window and knew it was love." Be careful, alright man? DANIEL Stalker!? Have you been listening? Whatever, it's cool. Later. Daniel hangs up phone and just sits on his bed, looking around his room. Then he looks at his watch and realizes that it actually is slow and takes it off. DANIEL 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi...this clock is way slow. Whoa. How could it... The clock is slow, but the time is right. Daniel checks his alarm clock and his watch again. DANIEL Well, I better put a new battery in it. Daniel rises off bed. DANIEL (in a joking tone.) I knew I wasn't totally crazy. Daniel shuts television off and goes into kitchen, opens a draw and pulls out a watch battery. He returns to his room with watch and battery in hand. DANIEL This better be the right battery; I never had to change it before. Daniel sits on his bed and begins to fidget with his watch. He removes the back of it and then takes out the battery. As he does that, the music shuts off and for that matter, any sound ceases to exist. He looks up in amazement and sees that the power is still on and his clock's face is still lit. Immediately he puts the new battery in the watch and time starts again. The music begins playing and everything is back to normal. DANIEL (in disbelief) Oh my God. Daniel then takes watch in hands and manually stops it. Time stops once again. Daniel manually winds the time back one-minute. The television turns back on, but is still because time has not restarted yet. Daniel's alarm clock is also a minute back. Daniel then restarts time and the music is a minute back and the television is on again. DANIEL Oh my God. I can control time. Thank you Grandpa. DANIEL as NARRATOR (to audience) I know what you're all thinking. This has got to be the greatest gift in the world. The ability to move time, forward and backward, but you see it's not all it's cracked up to be. Obviously, there are 2 paths I could walk. The good one... or the bad one. And it's a tough question... tougher than you'd think. I mean to be righteous or wicked, benevolent or malevolent. Everyone knows what they think they'd say, but if you actually had the chance to choose. It's like answering the question of "If you could have one superpower, which one would you choose?" You answer it in a second because you know it doesn't matter, but I mean if you would actually get a superpower, I guarantee you'd think about it long and hard before you answered. Anyway, this is where my conscience and the battle of it come into the story. FADE OUT FADE IN: INT. DANIEL'S MIND NARRATOR (v.o.) Now, every person's conscience is there, but it is rare that we ever hear about it. Normally, we go through life with the two sides compromising inside our head on every little decision we make. On one end we have our good side that would commit all virtuous and moral acts if it had the chance. Daniel's Good Side enters wearing a nice suit(white). He receives a kiss on the cheek from a woman upon exit from a door into white area. DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE (approaches camera and looks into it) Most people don't think the good guys got flava, but... we do. NARRATOR And on the other side is our bad side that would commit all immoral and evil acts if it had the chance. Daniel's Bad Side enters wearing something smooth. He receives a real kiss from girl as he enters into white room through door. NARRATOR You can see the two sides come out more at different times for different people. For example, when people drink alcohol their bad side usually takes charge... Daniel's Good Side picks up a bottle of liquor and starts taking shots. Daniel's Bad Side walks over to him, takes the bottle, pours them 2 shots and then begins whispering in his ear. FADE OUT FADE IN The bottle of liquor is empty. Daniel's Good Side is passed out and Daniel's Bad Side is inebriated, but conscious and more importantly in total control of Daniel. NARRATOR ...and when people go to church their good side is usually making the decisions. Daniel's Good Side is praying and it is driving Daniel's Bad Side crazy. Daniel's Bad Side grabs a pillow and covers his ears in disgust and Daniel's Good Side is perfectly content. NARRATOR Okay, now here was my predicament. My good side wanted to use the watch to better mankind and to help Daniel get ahead... Daniel's Good Side gives the camera a very noble smile, while shaking his head up and down. NARRATOR ...while my bad side wanted to wreak havoc and help Daniel get ahead in let's say, less virtuous ways. Daniel's Bad Side rubs his hands together with a very playful smile and shaking his head up and down. NARRATOR And with the opportunities offered by the watch they both realized compromises just wouldn't do. The 2 consciences look at one another and shake their heads right to left. NARRATOR Good wanted no part of Bad and Bad wanted no part of Good. The 2 consciences mouthing and signaling how they wanted nothing to do with the other. NARRATOR They decided that they would split their time controlling me. Daniel's Good Side picks up a blackboard and writes out an equation that equals fifty-fifty. Daniel's Bad Side smiles, shakes his head up and down, and extends a hand to Daniel's Good Side for the great idea. NARRATOR They would have no part in the other's decisions. Oh yeah, there was one rule: They could not go back in time and change what the other did. Daniel's Bad Side motions "1 thing" by extending his pointer finger. Daniel's Bad Side explains on the blackboard that they control Daniel separately and cannot change what the other did. Daniel's Good Side agrees and they shake on it. NARRATOR And that was that. They had a plan worked out that seemed flawless... but looks can be deceiving. FADE OUT MUSIC MONTAGE FADE IN: EXT. STREET - DAY Busy street with many cars passing through. Little boy on bicycle about to fall off and into traffic when Daniel runs up and saves him. INT. CLASSROOM - DAY Daniel has stopped time and is looking at answers on paper next to his. EXT. BACK OF HIGH SCHOOL - DAY Two tough guys are about to fight. Daniel is seen with two mothers pointing at tough guys. The tough guys look and see their mothers and cower away as their mothers yell at them. INT. CAFETERIA - DAY Daniel laughing as everyone's flys are undone, some kids pants are down, food is all over everybody, chaos is ensuing. EXT. STREET - DAY Scene in which Daniel's Good Side just saved boy. He is being interviewed by TV reporter and is smiling. INT. CLASSROOM - DAY Daniel receives test back with an A on it. EXT. BACK OF HIGH SCHOOL - DAY The mothers of the two boys are thanking Daniel. INT. CAFETERIA - DAY Daniel is laughing like crazy looking at everyone's pants down. END MONTAGE FADE IN: EXT. CAMPUS - DAY JACKIE is walking through campus and Daniel walks up. DANIEL Hey Jackie. What's up? JACKIE Oh nothing... She looks as if she is trying to remember his name. DANIEL Daniel. We had chemistry together last semester. We were lab partners that day your friend wasn't there. JACKIE Oh yeah, I remember now, (sarcastic) The Interesting and Amazing Phases of H20, right. I'm sorry. I am just so ready to get off campus. I've had a long day. DANIEL Yeah, me too. It's been a long week. So, anyway I was wondering if you weren't busy tonight, maybe we could do something? JACKIE Actually, I'm going to that party in The Villas. You should go. DANIEL Really. The Villas. I hadn't heard about it. JACKIE You should go. Well, I'm gonna miss my bus. I've got to go. Maybe I'll see you there. Jackie begins to walk away like she really wasn't even phased by her conversation with Daniel. DANIEL Okay, yeah I'll see you tonight. Daniel walks the other way discouraged, but confident. FADE OUT FADE IN: EXT. CAMPUS - DAY As Daniel is walking away from Jackie, he sees one of his close friends Abbe Fair and approaches her. DANIEL Hey Abbe, how are you? ABBE Good. And you? DANIEL I'm okay. I have been better, but for the most part I can't complain. I mean it's Friday, right? ABBE True, True. Speaking of Friday, what are you doing tonight? DANIEL There is this party at the Villas I just heard about. We should go. ABBE Really. Who'd you hear that from? DANIEL Jackie. ABBE Ohhhh. Your girl that just doesn't know she's your girl yet, right? DANIEL That's the one. ABBE Just get that wrestler boyfriend out of the picture and get her to fall in love with you and you've got her. DANIEL You're so funny. Anyway, you want to go with me? ABBE Sure. I told Rick that I would hang out with him tonight too. Can we come by your place at like 8? We can chill before the party. DANIEL Actually, my family is in town tonight and they want to have dinner with me. I am not really looking forward to it either. I think they want to talk about my future. ABBE Well then, I guess I will just see you there. You want me get you your Vodka and Gatorade, I think you might need it after dinner. DANIEL Yes, please. Have it ready. I know I am going to need a lot of it. FADE OUT FADE IN: EXT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT INT. RESTAURANT The restaurant is very informal. Elli, Daniel's father, JOHN, Daniel's sister, JENNIFER are all there waiting for Daniel's arrival. JOHN Now Elli, don't back down once Daniel gets here. We know what this trip was for. We have to give our son a wake up call and get him thinking about an actual future. ELLI John, don't yell at him. You know you don't get through to him when you yell, okay? Here he comes. Daniel walks into restaurant. Hey honey, how are you? DANIEL I'm good. How was the ride? ELLI It was nice. DANIEL Hey Dad, Jennifer. JOHN, JENNIFER Hey Daniel. FADE OUT FADE IN: INT. RESTAURANT JOHN So, Daniel have you put any more thought into what you want to major in? Don't you have to declare a major by next semester? DANIEL (in an annoyed tone.) Dad, I already told you that I am not sure about my future in college. JOHN I know what you told me and I already told you that you have to finish college. I mean how do you expect to make a living. The world gets more and more competitive everyday. If you don't get a degree, how do you plan on making an income or having kids or anything? DANIEL Dad, don't worry about me, I'll be just fine. JOHN That's great, just great. My son doesn't know how he'll survive in this world, he just knows he will. Do you think it's just going to happen? (pause for response) Oh wait, are you still stuck on that movie star thing? You actually think you are going to be a goddamn movie star. Good, go out to California and come back famous. I wouldn't hold my breath though. DANIEL Dad...please JOHN (sarcastically) No, seriously do you think it is like "Poof, I'm rich..." or "Poof, I'm famous" because it's not. People get places in this world because of hard work and determination, not luck. Your mother and I worked very hard for what we have provided you with. You don't just get all this overnight. DANIEL (tired) Dad...please. JOHN Don't "please" me Daniel. You are a big boy now. Your mother and I decided on the way up that we were going to get this through to you whether you liked it or not. You wanting to be a loser... I'm sorry I mean a movie star just is not going to cut it anymore. You are a big boy and it is time that you started having big boy ideas. Your dreams are over. Now, you must move on and realistically think of what you are going to do with your life. Okay, so please stop with that "please" crap because you're 21 and you have to start thinking about your future. Aren't you the least bit nervous about where you are going to be in 5 years? DANIEL (sobbing) Yes, Dad. Okay, yes. Yes, I am nervous, I'm terrified. Is that what you want to hear? That I am absolutely terrified about where I am going to be in five years. I know that 95% of the people that try to make it in film don't and get eaten up by the industry. That fact crosses my mind at least once a day, but what do you want me to do. Do you think a four-year degree is going to help me in the least bit? I want to go to L.A. because I want it so bad. It is my dream. I want it so bad. JOHN Goddamn it Daniel. Are you that naïve? "I want it so bad, wah, wah, wah" You want it, I know you want it, but guess what... everybody wants it. The people who get it are the ones who put in the time now. Your mother and I have sat in the back seat long enough watching your grades slip and your focus shift to your long shot. It is destroying us. Don't you realize that if you go to California and you don't make it. You are right back where you started only much older and not able to go to school full time because your mother and I will not be paying for it. DANIEL Dad, you can't stop me. You never had a dream and if you did you lost it a long time ago. Don't get mad at me for that. I am not like you Dad and it kills you. You are so jealous of the will I have that you never could harness when you had to. JOHN Why you? How dare you talk to me like that. I calmed down after I realized that your mother and I were going to get married and have you children. I settled down and began saving money. The arrogance you must possess to challenge your own father amazes me. DANIEL Dad you are so pathetic. Do you think for one minute your measly existence is enough to justify let alone convince me that college will make me successful? Cause here's a news flash. It won't. JOHN (shocked) What? I can't believe what I just heard, but you know what I really don't even care. You are a loser now and you always were one, I don't even think of you as my son anymore. Do me a favor, when you finally realize in L.A. that you are going to be a bum, call me collect I'll pay for it and I'll stay on long enough to laugh into the receiver and tell you to have a nice life and don't ever try coming home because you're not welcome. God, you disgust me. I'm leaving. John shakes his head as he turns away. Daniel erupts through the dining table and attacks his father. He pushes him over screaming and hovers right on top of him, screaming, grunting, and crying, but every time Daniel realizes he is crying, his face turns meaner and he howls. Elli jumps up and starts pulling on Daniel. ELLI Daniel, get off of your father right now! What has gotten into you? Daniel rises off of his father and is grabbed by his mother and just begins crying on her shoulder as John gets up and just walks away in disgust. FADE OUT FADE IN: EXT. STREET Daniel walking looking very stressed. NARRATOR The division of my consciences was destroying me. Don't get me wrong, my father had it coming to him. That entire fight would have happened regardless of my consciences, but the scary part was the polarization of my emotions. I could not react logically to something, it was either one extreme or the other. Too sensitive, too angry, too nice, too mean. I no longer had the middle ground that people rely on for their outward behavior towards other people. FADE OUT FADE IN: INT. DANIEL'S MIND DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE What are you doing? DANIEL'S BAD SIDE Nothing, are we going to this party? DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE No, I am. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE Oh really and why is this, you're no good at parties? DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE Jackie. You are not going to screw things up for me with her. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE (rising intonation) Oh. Is that who you were talking with today? (sarcastically) She seemed really interested in you. DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE She will be... once I figure out what she finds interesting. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE That doesn't seem to be a very virtuous thing for Mr. Goody Two-Shoes to do. DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE Oh. Give me a break. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE Hey, whatever. I don't care what you do as long as you don't get us killed or put in jail; but then again I guess we don't have to worry too much about jail. Just make sure you don't mess up tonight lover boy because I'll be waiting. FADE OUT FADE IN EXT. THE VILLAS - NIGHT INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT A party with keg and mixed drinks. Loud music is playing. Crowded with people. Everyone is holding a cup with an alcoholic beverage. Dark. Cigarette smoke everywhere. Daniel walks in. Walking through people looking for Abbe and Rick. Finally, he sees them. RICK Look who finally decided to show up. How you doing man? DANIEL Tonight was insane. My parents and I got into a crazy fight. I am glad to be out of there. ABBE Lucky for you, I've got just the thing to take your worries away. How you want to do this? Abbe hands Daniel Vodka. DANIEL Actually, I don't think tonight is the best night for this. Tomorrow night, we'll get crazy, alright? ABBE, RICK What? Come on, man. ABBE You have got to loosen up tonight. RICK How are you going to be able to talk to Jackie if you don't drink? DANIEL She's here? Where? Rick signals to the back of the room where Jackie is sitting on a couch by herself. RICK Back there. And good news, she is in a big fight with her boyfriend, Rob. DANIEL Really. Well... still, I don't need alcohol to talk with her. Watch. RICK Okay. As Daniel walks away toward Jackie, he pulls Abbe close. DANIEL Abbe, we have to talk. I am going insane and you are the only person I trust. Please later on you have got to help me, okay? ABBE Sure Daniel. I'll be here. Daniel walks away from Abbe and towards Jackie. DANIEL Jackie? JACKIE (mildly intoxicated) Hey... Daniel, right? Daniel shakes his head. JACKIE How's it going? Are you having fun? Why don't you have a beer? DANIEL I just got here. I don't think tonight's a drinking night for me. JACKIE What? Sure it is. Come on. Daniel's feeling more nervous than expected and he gives in. DANIEL Alright. I guess one wouldn't hurt. JACKIE (to her friends) Hey you guys, get me another beer. Guy hands her beer and she hands it to Daniel. JACKIE There you go. DANIEL (nervously) Thanks. JACKIE So, tell me about yourself. DANIEL Well okay, I have lived here... FADE OUT FADE IN: EXT. THE VILLAS - NIGHT INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT Daniel and Jackie are sitting in same spot. Ten empty beer bottles sit on the counter top next to them. They are intoxicated. JACKIE (giggling) I think you are the funniest thing. DANIEL Really, so does that mean you are going to hook up with me? JACKIE What? DANIEL You didn't think I would have wasted my night getting drunk with a bimbo if I didn't think I was going to get laid, do you? JACKIE I can't believe you. To think, I thought you were different. Jackie slaps Daniel as she storms off. DANIEL I guess I won't be having any of that tonight. Damn it's late, I have got to go home and get to sleep. Daniel gets up stumbles out of the house and into the street and begins to walk home. FADE OUT FADE IN: EXT.: DANIEL'S HOUSE INT.: DANIEL'S BEDROOM DANIEL I have got to get to bed. I am about to pass out. Daniel shuts light off and lays down. FADE OUT FADE IN: INT.: DANIEL'S BEDROOM Daniel wakes up and turns his light on. As he looks into his mirror, he sees himself in his mirror as his Bad Side and as he touches his clothes to see if he is really wearing those clothes, he is suddenly wearing the Good Side's clothes and then he looks up and his Bad Side is still in the mirror and bites at him. He immediately wakes up in a cold sweat. He gets up and turns his light on. As he looks in the mirror, he sees his Good Side and looks down at his clothes, which are the Bad Side's. He looks up and his Good Side gives him a mean look. Daniel punches the mirror and breaks it. He starts throwing things around and knocks his phone off the hook in a vicious rage. His rage turns into a hysterical crying fit and as he falls to the ground the dial tone can be heard in the background. TELEPHONE Dial tone................................Ring...Ring...If you'd like to make a call please hang up and dial again. If you need help please hang up and dial your operator. If you'd like to make a call please hang up and dial again. If you need help please hang up and dial your operator. Eh, Eh, Eh, Eh, Eh... Daniel with a sudden look of hope puts the phone back on the hook. He picks it up and dials zero. TELEPHONE Ring...Ring...Ring...Hello? DANIEL Hello? TELEPHONE Daniel? DANIEL How did you know? Who is this? TELEPHONE This is Abbe. What is going on? Are you in trouble? Talk to me about it. I can help. Daniel picks his head up and sees Abbe sitting next to him. He looks at the phone and then hangs it back up. DANIEL Oh God Abbe, I am in so much trouble. You see I got this watch and... Abbe interrupts. ABBE I know all about the watch. Tell me what is wrong with your feelings, that is what I am here to help you with. DANIEL I am so confused. My mind is split in two basically and I am turning into a head case. I need to know how to fix it. Why am I happy one minute and angry the next, what is going on? Do I have to get rid of the watch? Do I have to be nicer to my parent's? What? Just tell me and I will do it. I can't live like this any longer. ABBE Your problem is not the watch. Your problem started because of the watch, but it is no longer the problem. You see when you got that watch your conscience split into two halves to use the watch to its fullest potential. And because of that you are experiencing all of these heavy emotions. The only way you can return to the old way of living is by fusing your two consciences back into one. DANIEL How do I do that? ABBE You can't. You're lucky. One of the halves wishes it back that way. He is fighting it out with the other half right now and by the time you wake up it will all be solved. DANIEL Thank you, Abbe. You know for the first time in a long while, I feel like I might be normal again. ABBE You, why don't you figure it out and start saying us because that's what we are. You carry out all the actions, but your sub-conscious only deals with half of the thoughts that go into your actions. I control your unconscious mind, which is a bigger part of your life than you could ever imagine. I came to you as Abbe in this dream because she is the sole person that both your conscience's trust and it would be easy to explain the situation to you. Also, in a dream is the only time I can talk to you as a whole without worrying about the two consciences getting involved. Did you ever wonder why your dreams were so complex and abstract. Dreams are the sole escape for your mind's anxieties and problems without getting the sub-conscious involved. To get another perspective on things if you will. So, anyway when you wake up, I promise you will no longer have conflicting thoughts in your head. And don't feel bad about what has been happening, for not knowing, you handled the situation better than almost anyone could have. FADE OUT FADE IN: EXT.: DANIEL'S HEAD INT.: DANIEL'S MIND NARRATOR (v.o.) I believe this is where we started, isn't it? DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE (pissed off) I can't believe you. I should have done this a long time ago. I knew you would try to ruin things for me. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE (all-knowing) You're right, you should have. Now please, will you go ahead and do it already. Or are you going to sit here and talk about it all day. DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE How could you? You want things back the old way. Well, I won't let you have them back the old way. I like the ways things are. It is nice to be in control. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE You still will be in control, but we will have the checks on one another like before. We are too powerful like this, we need checks on our power. It is not right, to us or to Daniel. DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE (almost hysterical) Shut up! That's not true. I won't let you have checks on me. You already destroy things I work hard for. You ruined my chances with the girl of my dreams. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE What are you talking about? I just took over when you got too inebriated to carry on your duties as Romeo. She never liked you anyway. Just because you kept reversing time on her and answering questions exactly how you know she'd like you to doesn't mean anything. Do you know how crazy you sound? Girl of your dreams... You make me sick. She wouldn't be the girl of your dreams, she would be the girl of our dreams, and she's not. Airhead bimbos are not my type. I think these weeks apart have really messed you up. We both control things. This ship has more than one captain... but I guess you're doing something about that, huh? DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE (focused) You are not messing things up for me anymore. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE (to audience) He doesn't get it yet. I can't believe he doesn't get it yet. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE Fine, righteous one, kill me. Just because I am the only truth or boundary in your life and I make things harder, go ahead. DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE You don't make things harder, you just manipulate everything I create for us and make it ugly. DANIEL'S BAD SIDE I make it ugly. You are the one that has made the world we live in ugly. That watch has made you greedier and more power hungry than I could ever be. Controlling emotions, people, feelings. All I do is tell people how I feel. You are what has manipulated our world and made it ugly. I hope that when I'm gone you can realize one day how wrong and sick you are. DANIEL'S GOOD SIDE Shut up! Just SHUUUUUUUUUT UUUUUUUP!!!!!!! Daniel's Good Side fires the gun at Daniel's Bad Side. A big puff of smoke from the gun covers the face of Daniel's Good Side. As the smoke clears Daniel's Bad Side is holding the gun and on the ground is Daniel's Good Side, dead. Daniel walks out into area where the confrontation just occurred and the other characters are frozen. DANIEL (to audience) I know you're probably confused and upset. Let me tell you something, he killed himself. He points at Daniel's Good Side. DANIEL I tried to warn him. He had his heart set on destroying me. That's why he died. That gun couldn't do anything. It was the notion that he had the conviction to kill. That is not a virtuous thing. Therefore, he's gone. It had to turn out this way. Pure good is like utopia. Anything too perfect is not. On another note, I'm sorry for keeping you guys in the dark. I mean "Good Side" and "Bad Side." I could have just said Good Side and me, but I wanted you guys to take the journey and decide for yourselves who was right. I mean if you knew bad was right from the beginning, you would have disagreed and never truly listened. Think about it, you know I'm right. So now that that is taken care of, we have got things to do. FADE OUT FADE IN: EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY RADIO STATION D.J. (o.s.) DANIEL Could things get any better? He walks up past a building and sits on a bench to work some problems. Across the way, Jackie and a big guy are talking. ROBERT Is that him? Is that the prick that said that to you the other night? I'm going to rearrange his face. JACKIE No, please Bobby, don't do anything. ROBERT Thinks he can talk to my girlfriend like that and get away with it. I'll show him. JACKIE Bobby!! NO!! Bobby!! NO!! Robert walks over to Daniel at a quick pace. ROBERT Hey Daniel, that was real funny what you said to my girlfriend the other night. You prick. Daniel turns realizing what is going on as Robert goes to punch him in the face.
