Ships of the Spanish-American War-- Cruisers--USS Newark, USS Baltimore, USS Philadelphia and USS San Francisco

Completed in 1889 and 1890, these four protected cruisers followed the general arrangement typical of sailing ships, with all armament carried in broadside positions. Newark (Cruiser # 1) and San Francisco (Cruiser # 5) served in the Atlantic and Caribbean theatres during the Spanish-American War. Baltimore (Cruiser # 3) was in the Asiatic Squadron and participated in the Battle of Manila Bay. Philadelphia (Cruiser # 4), a Pacific Squadron ship, took part in the occupation of Hawaii.

Baltimore and San Francisco were later converted to minelayers, serving into the early 1920s in that role, while Newark and Philadelphia were reduced to non- operational status prior to World War I.

This page features views of these four cruisers.
