Organic cotton in Greece
The first cultivation of organic cotton in Europe was begun under our
company's supervision in 1993 and is conducted in accordance with
Regulation 2078/92 of the European Union (which provides that no chemicals,
etc. may be used for 3 years). Certification is provided by the
internationally recognized bureau DIO.
The company provides assistance to organic cotton growers:
· with advice on cultivation (using its own agricultural experts)
· preparing compost from gin waste and poultry manure
· absorbing the cost of certification
· paying a premium of 40 drachmas per kilo of seed cotton
Our company THRAKIKA EKKOKISTIRIA S.A. (Thrace Cotton Ginning Mills) is the
first Greek company, and the first ginning mill in the world, to be
certified under the international Environmental Management System ISO
14000.
