Ray, Mike, Thanks. Hey, you guys got within 6% of the same 100 mesh
numbers! So where did you find your 100 micron/100 mesh fiber/wire filter,
Mike?

Seriously, thanks both of you for your informative reply. This is what I
understand from it plus what I understood before, to confirm:

"Mesh" is a relative number, approximating holes per inch. Microns
(millionth of a meter, same as a micrometer, I think) are hole/opening size
number. Thread or wire size determines opening size, ultimately. (But I'd
also add here that thread/wire type seems to have a major effect, other
subject...) Different manufacturers using different diameter materials will
likely have an opening size that results in a different mesh number from
others. No wonder I'm confused.

Correct? What we want is to know the microns of the openings, mesh being
determined by diameter of the material and not very informative, hmm? Size
of openings per inch, not mesh, is most important. Ya?

But here's another confusion: A paint filter here in US has an opening
about 1 millimeter (1,000 microns) by half-a-millimeter or so. Do you use
the horizontal or vertical to determine "mesh?" I mean this jokingly.
Paint filters seem to make good compost filters, whatever the mesh. What a
mess is this mesh, eh?

Mike's table confirms mesh and microns are inversely related, for square
holes anyway. You'd think for someone getting used to accomodating ten's of
variables, three variables would be easier to do, but I still don't get
it... Gonna go for microns of openings, though, whatever mesh.
