To: all those involved in the development of the Soil Biology Primer

I wanted to share the enthusiastic messages I have been receiving about the
Primer. These are pasted below.

But first, to update you on the status of distribution:

State NRCS offices received bulk shipments of the Primer around December
15th. SQI mailed out copies to 140 individuals and organizations who
requested copies over the last 2 years.

Each field office will get a copy as part of an all-office mailing once we
have updated the transmittal letter to reflect new ordering instructions.
7700 copies were sent to the LANDCARE office in Ankeny, but they are going
fast. Landcare staff have been responding to numerous requests daily from
NRCS employees who read the announcement in NRCS This Week (Dec 24).
Single and bulk copies can be ordered by calling 1-888-LANDCARE.

On to the reactions from our customers:

A hand written post card from a North Carolina district read, "Thanks for
sending the Soil Biology Primer. This is an excellent booklet. If there is
anything better it would surprise me. This booklet along with the Soil
Quality Information Sheets by USDA-NRCS done in April of 1996, make this an
excellent teaching tool and reference guide."

A North Dakota District wrote, " WOW! The NRCS Soil Biology Primer is among
the nicest, most professional publications our agency has distributed. Can
I get a few more copies,. . . "

And a fax from Wisconsin: "Could we get 30 copies of the Soil biology
Primer? We plan to use this great publication with our local science and ag
instructors in the Green Bay area."

Here are the e-mail messages:

Thanks much for sending me a copy of the latest Soil Biology Primer.
Arriving just after Christmas, it made a nice surprise.
There are real solid production values in the look and layout of the
booklet. As in most NRCS publications that I recall from my days in public
information at USDA, photographs contributed greatly. I particularly
appreciated the microscopy images. Also, you had topflight authors in
Elaine Ingham and Clive Edwards.
The publication offers very accessible reading, and it should get wide use.
It's a real public service.
Thanks for remembering to send it to me.
Sincerely, -Ted Patterson

Ann,
. . .
By the way, I forgot to mention the OUTSTANDING SOIL BIOLOGY PRIMER!! This
is one of the best products I have ever seen in the Agency. This will have
years and years of longevity, probably going strong into the next millenium!
This could be a wonderful intro for any high school ecology/biology class.
Kudos to those with the vision to create such a wonderful educational
experience!

Dear Ms Lewandowski,
I received the 'Soil Biology Primer'the other day. It is wonderful, and
worth the wait (for me nearly 2years since Elaine Ingham spoke at our
CFSA Organic Growers School). Congratulations on the beautiful layout
and color pictures, and also the references and credits. Thank you very
much.
I would like to obtain a bunch of these to give to various people to
help educate them on this subject, as I believe it will 'help save the
world', and 'spreading the word' is my main goal after looking after my
family.
I would be glad to pay money for them, to help you print more.
Please let me know how to proceed. Say order 10 to start.
Thanks aqgain,
Ed Updike

Ann,
Thank you! I received a single copy from the SCI Iowa office (from "Craig
Ditzler" - perhaps I was already on your mailing list?). It is wonderful!
As I mentioned, I'd like to get several copies to distribute to technical
outreach staff like myself - can you send a few or tell me how to find my
local office of the NRCS to request a few?
We would also like to find out about buying multiple copies (say 50 to 500
copies) to distribute to landscape professionals whom we are trying to
educate in this region. Can you tell me if it is possible to buy these in
bulk, and if so how?
Again, my congratulations on a job very well done -now we are thrilled to
be able to put it to use!
