As a matter of fact, we've made a few changes this month
to simplify the information distribution process. The Ezine body
itself that you will be receiving from now on will be
considerably shorter and consist mostly of outlines and
links...the FULL version ... the very LENGTHY full version...
will now be archived at http://www.soilfoodweb.com/ezine.html

Thanks for subscribing and remember... mark Sept. 27 on
your calendar for the next SFI Workshop!

1.) Broadcast News From The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods
***************************************************************************
Recently the City of Minneapolis became the third major city
in the United States to pass a resolution endorsing our federal legislation
to label genetically engineered foods. The Mayor has indicated he will sign
the resolution on Thursday. The resolution also endorses the safety testing
legislation and includes organic food vendors in contract negotiations. The
resolution passed with an 11-1 vote.

Boston, Massachusetts and Austin, Texas have also passed similar
resolutions.

As you are probably aware, The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered
Foods is based in Seattle, Washington. We have a meeting scheduled with a
member of the Seattle City Council for October 4th where we expect to get an
agreement to introduce such a resolution for the City of Seattle.

ACTIVISTS RECEIVING THIS E-MAIL MAY WANT TO APPROACH YOUR CITY COUNCILS TO
PASS SIMILAR RESOLUTIONS. [more]

3.) Soils for Salmon Project Building a Network!
***************************************************
Recently we received a request for help from the fine people at the
Soils For Salmon Project. It seems that Sego Jackson and company have been
developing a list of contacts to send future SFS information as it is developed.
Some of this information they might like reviewed, some of it they might like to
encourage others to research, and some of it will be informational. Specifically
they are interested in soil and compost listserves, key soil professionals, soil and
compost-related organizations, and others who have shown great interest in
soil quality. They are searching for contacts both regionally and nationally.

Any suggestions you have would be most appreciated.

4.) Healthy Lawns, Healthy Environment - New Report Tells How
****************************************************************
Seattle Public Utilities has just released a research report,
"Ecologically Sound Lawn Care for the Pacific Northwest: Findings from the
Scientific Literature and Recommendations from Turf Professionals." The
report contains three useful tools for landscape professionals, public
agency resource managers, and education and outreach staff.

1) An introduction to ecologically-based lawn care, and a thorough review
of the science that supports a change toward practices that require less
water, synthetic fertilizer and pesticides, and produce less waste.

2) Complete, field-tested ecologically sound lawn care practices for the
region west of the Cascade Mountains, based on interviews with turf
professionals and scientists around the region and extensive review of the
professional literature.

3) An annotated bibliography of useful books, articles, videos, and
internet sites.

"This report has particular value now as Northwest residents seek ways to
protect rivers, lakes and marine waters for threatened salmon species,"
said Diana Gale, SPU Director. "Professionals already using these
practices find they are cost-effective and appeal to a growing group of
customers concerned about the environment."

The entire report, or a summary, can be dowloaded from Seattle Public
Utilities' Resource Conservation website. Look under "Natural Lawn Care"
at http://www.ci.seattle.wa.us/util/rescons

Printed copies of the report can be requested by calling (206) 684-7560.

5.) Your Neighbors - Unwilling Victims of Pesticide Misuse
************************************************************

Click here: <http://ens.lycos.com/ens/aug2000/2000L-08-25g.html or read below.

Enough about science and art, Close up these barren leaves; Come forth, and bring
with you a heart That watches and receives. -- William Wordsworth

Each day, millions of tons of pesticides are applied to crops, freeway medians,
homes and lawns nationwide. Until now, neither private individuals nor companies
have been required to notify people surrounding the application site. Finally,
the stage has been set for that to change with New York State's new law. New York
has passed one of the nation's strongest laws which, beginning March 1, 2001, allows
counties in the state to choose to require all companies, schools and private
individuals to give 48 hour written notification of any pesticide use to
property owners within 150 feet of the planned application. New York
Governor George Pataki said that "Every neighbor will now know to take in
the wash, close the windows, and not have the kids roll around in the
yard." To see a picture of a Worker spraying trees and shrubs - and the
neighbors (Photo courtesy Long Island Neighborhood Network) - click on the above url.
This is important legislation that highlights the fact that while debates go on in
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency about the safety of many pesticide products, adults and
children are being subjected to pesticide exposure without their consent
virtually every hour of every day. [more, more, more]

6.) Plant Production Overview
******************************
The second CD in the series, Dr. Ingham explores the effect
chemically intensive agriculture has had on soil life,
why pesticides are effective initially, but with continued
use, result in the destruction of beneficial soil life, with
direct negative impacts on sustainable agriculture.

Hello All,

Remember the Compost and Compost Tea seminar on Sept 27. We'll be heading
up to Ron Stewart's composting facility on Sept 26, if anyone would care to
join us. E-mail me about space availability in my van, and where I could
pick you up.

The Ecological Society of America meeting was the first full week of
August, and there were something like 3,200 attendees at the meeting, about
2,900 presentations, 14 concurrent sessions going at any one time, with
morning and evening sessions on top of the day-time sessions, and
basically, Kim Ettero and I were responsible for the entire scientific
program running smoothly.

It was a big job, but now I have passed the torch of program chariship on
to the next victim - oh, I mean, volunteer. I learned alot as program
chair, it was really interesting, but I'm glad to have that behind me.
I'll have so much more time to pay attention to the business and to
academics. Phew!

But the ESA program went great, people were quite happy with the
scheduling, although not with how packed the rooms were. ESA has out-grown
Snowbird Utah. there were a number of great presentations, but the ones I
was most interested in were the ones that showed that high carbon
containing compost would indeed "suck-up" N and harm plant growth, but if
nutrient cyclers (that's flagellates, amoebae, ciliates and bacterial- and
-fungal-feeding nematodes, fungal-feeding microarthropods) were present in
addequate numbers, then that N-limitation could be ameliorated. I always
like to have more corraboration that the foodweb works.

I was recently in New York City and on Long Island and had a great time
seeing a number of golf courses, Battery Park, a Broadway show, lots of
landscapes and even talking about good compost and compost tea! There's a
very good possibility I'll be spending more time on the east coast.

The Vermillenium is coming up, and I'd like to send out this "Mission
Statement" for the meeting, along with an invitation to have you join us at
the meeting. It should be a good one! Worm compost is excellent material,
as long as you know what organisms are present in it. Worm compost can be
fungal-dominated, if you feed the worms the right stuff!

Please contact Mary (address etc below) if you'd like more details on the
meeting.

Elaine

September Q&A

Here are the Questions posed to Dr. Ingham this month. For her complete
answers visit the full version of this Ezine at:

Q-1)
We are professional gardeners in Atlanta Ga. In our older gardens(over 10
years) we are experiencing a very severe problem of root and stem rot in
the cool seasonal annual beds(Violas, Pansies and Snapdragons). Soil tests
have confirmed the presence of Pythium and Rhizoctonia. We will not use
soil fungicides, and have had only limited success with total soil
replacement. Two years ago we tried Rootshield with no success. Please
recommend how you think we should procede

Thanks, Jimmy Stewart

Q-2.)

Elaine,

Just read your ezine. I read your email before the ezine, so disregard my
question about Bio-Start. I've contacted Bio-Start in NZ and SeaSource in
Utah. Thanks again for the heads up.

Upon reading the Bio-Start site, I see them refer to their products as
biofermented. It seems this is the buzzword for most of the "new wave,"
bioremediation products (Agro-K refers to their products as fermentation
byproducts). It's very challenging to explain WHAT these products are
without sounding like a snake-oil peddler. Can you help me out here?

Kevin
