Since Duke had pretty much finished off UNC by
halftime, I went down to Brickhouse road just before
nighfall to check out the woodcock displaying. I didnt
see any grosbeaks or purple finches but I cant say I
looked. I went down to the last parking area and
walked down the trail a bit.
I thought to myself, where would I go if I were a
woodcock wanting to show off a bit? I picked a spot
in a field near a pond where the ground was wet and
the grass had been flattened out (gotta be where you
can be seen).
I didnt know I had this ability, and if somebody asked
me, "if you could have a superpower, what would it
be?" my answer would not be "the power to think like a
woodcock" but nevertheless, after I had staked out my
spot for a few minutes, a woodcock flew in and landed
not 10 feet in front of me. He gave me the full
display, peenting with his whole body and showing the
underside of his tail like a grouse might with the
orange untertail coverts and the silver retrix tips.
It was still fairly light (overcast evenings are the
best to see woodcock I think because they seem to come
out a little earlier than on clear nights) so I really
got a good look at him. He took off in a display
flight and I lost him in the dusk. From my position I
could hear at least 4 other males calling in the
night.
Spring has sprung.
