P3 and Mackey Island birds

Greetings,
Saturday I spent a half-day birding the Palmetto Peartree Preserve (P3) in
Tyrell County; Sunday a half-day birding with Joan on the Mackey Island NWR
up in Currituck County. Highlights among 94 species were:
Loads of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers on the P3 - it is truly a "can't miss"
spot for these birds. Of interest, they are using Loblolly Pines - as far as
I know there are no Long-leafs out there. In addition to their own cavities
the woodeckers are also using man-made nest boxes which are "implanted" into
the trees.
There are lots of other woodpeckers out there - real good numbers of
Red-headeds, also Pileated, Hairy, Downy, Red-bellied and Northern Flickers.
There is also a good assortment of warblers and flycatchers on the preserve,
including Swainson's and Worm-eating Warblers.
On the Mackey Island refuge, of greatest interest were the Least Bitterns
(year list), Tree Swallows and Cedar Waxwings. We found several Tree
Swallows which appeared to be nesting in standing dead trees. Also, we ran
into 2 pairs of Cedar Waxwings which were probably nesting as well.
	Good birding,
