This morning (8/21), Chris Eley and Les Todd discovered a juvenile
Hudsonian Godwit at Falls Lake (near Durham NC). Chris relocated it in
the evening and noted the black underwing-coverts to confirm the ID.
Hudsonian Godwits are very rare inland -- this is only the fourth report
for Falls and Jordan Lakes and the other reports were all in 1988.
If you'd like to look for this bird before it heads to Argentina, go to
the Hickory Hills boat ramp -- take the Redwood Road exit off I-85 (exit
183), head east on Redwood Road, and turn left into the boat ramp area.
Once at the boat ramp, walk along the shore west towards I-85 until you
see the shorebirds in the mudflats. Look for the big one. Chris and Les
also saw a Buff-breasted in the area. See you there Sunday!
