Bird ID

Carolina Birders,

My husband and I have just begun trying to identify birds in our yard as
of two or three months ago--never done any birding. We've ID'd
approximately 40 birds. We still have a few that we can't positively
ID. Last week my husband saw a black bird with a white ring around its
neck (about the size of a Brewer's Blackbird). He got a quick look, but
thought the ring went all the way around his neck. Saturday, our
granddaughter, Jill--age 9, spotted the same bird and came to get me so
I could see.. The bird had moved from where she first saw it. I only
got a side view. It was black, but I couldn't tell if the ring went all
the way around its neck. Jill said she saw it turn its head from side
to side and it looked as if the ring went all the way around--ring was
approximately 1/3" wide. Does anyone know what it could be?

We still had a female ruby throat humming bird at our feeder as of
Saturday. We live in Morehead City.
