Dwayne and I birded the Mt. Mitchell area this morning. There certainly
wasn't much around! There were two Common Ravens and a small flock of Red
Crossbills who flew over the restaurant. We checked Lake Tahoma, on Hwy 80
as you are going towards Mt. Mitchell from Marion, and had much better luck!
There, we had:
6 Horned Grebes
17 Hooded Mergansers
3 Black Ducks
2 American Wigeon
6 Lesser Scaup
21 Ring-necked Ducks
1 Bufflehead (our first male of the year)
31 Mallards
5 Green-winged Teal
8 American Coots
and a Pine Siskin and three Red-breasted Nuthatches in a
Chickadee/Titmouse/Kinglet flock.
We headed up the Blue Ridge Parkway towards Boone after that and found
another male Bufflehead, 1 Lesser Scaup, 1 Pied-billed Grebe, 6 Ring-necked
Ducks, and 4 Wood Ducks on Julian Price Lake. We also checked out the
feeders at Grandfather Mountain. We were hoping for Evening Grosbeaks, but
found none. We had Chickadees, Titmice, Doves, Juncos, and White &
Red-breasted Nuthatches instead.
We stopped by Lake Hickory on the way home and found our first Common Loon
of the season at Oxford Boat Access.
