The Third Annual Wings Over Water Festival concluded this evening with the
Wolf Howling. The wind howled most of the day under sunny skies and warm
temperatures, making the birding pleasant but blustery. Over 185 species
were tallied for the three day event with several reports not received at
this time. Another American Tree Sparrow was found today at the Pea Island
Visitor Center, bringing the total to two American Tree Sparrows in the same
vicinity (additional message to follow). Many usually common birds seen at
this time of year have not been reported, yet. Some of the most unusual
birds seen during the weekend were:
American Tree Sparrow - 2
Northern Saw-whet Owl -1
Purple Sandpiper - 4 (at least)
Solitary Sandpiper - 1
Connecticut Warbler - 1
Tennessee Warbler -1
Western Tanager - 1
Rufous Hummingbird - 1
Short-eared Owl - 4
Thayer's Gull (1st year) - 1
White-breasted Nuthatch - 1
Eared Grebe - 2
Unidentified nightjar - 1
A complete listing of species and locations will be available soon at the
Wings Over Water web site http://www.northeast-nc.com/wings. Please feel
free to contact me regarding any of the birds seen during the festival and I
will try to give you the best information I have.
