Hi Carolinabirders,
Paul Rogers and myself birded this morning at Huntington Beach S.P. Areas
covered were the causeway area, with tide low but incoming, including the
marsh side and Mullet Pond. We then did the carriage path (disappointing)
and walked the Sandpiper Trail to the platform overlooking Sandpiper Pond.
A noticeable cold front went through last night so temps were mostly in the
50's with brisk NW winds. About 46 species which follow
Pied-billed Grebe-4
Horned Grebe-1 in Mullet Pond
Brown Pelican-2 as seen from the viewing platform overlooking Sandpiper Pond.
Double-crested Cormorant-4
LEAST BITTERN-1 rare this late-may be attempting to Winter. I flushed the
bird from the viewing platform behind the camp office.
Great Blue Heron-3
Great Egret-6
Snowy Egret-1
Tricolored Heron-3
Green Heron-1
White Ibis-25 including 1 immature rest adults
Green-winged Teal-4 in Sandpiper Pond
Gadwall-8
Am. Wigeon-50 all in Sandpiper Pond
Lesser Scaup-1 male in Mullet Pond
Hooded Merganser-27 in both Mullet and Sandpiper Pond
Ruddy Duck-15 all but one in Sandpiper Pond
Turkey Vulture-5
N. Harrier-5
Merlin-1
Accipter sp-1
Clapper Rail-3 heard only
Am. Coot-50+
Black-bellied Plover-6
Semipalmated Plover-4
Killdeer-3
Willet-8
Western Sandpiper-20
Dunlin-30
Short-billed Dowitcher-40
Ring-billed Gull-30
Mourning Dove-1
Belted Kingfisher-2
Tree Swallow-100
Blue Jay-1
Am. Crow-1 heard only
Carolina Chickadee-2
House Wren-1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet-6
N. Mockingbird-1
Yellow-rumped Warbler-15
Rufous-sided Towhee-3
Song Sparrow-1
Swamp Sparrow-3
White-throated Sparrow-5
Red-winged Backbird-4
Boat-tailed Grackle-7
Surprisingly there were a few butterflies including a beautiful Monarch
and an even more stunning Red Admiral and a Sulphur with a noticeable black
border especially at the apex of the forewing from below there were some
scattered brown spots. Any help here.
