The Foothills Bird Club had its "duck hunt" field trip this past Saturday.
Ten birders scoped Lakes Rhodhiss, Hickory and Lookout Shoals with not a
great deal of luck. Our day started off on the right foot when we spooked
up four Black Vultures who were feeding on a deer carcass. It was nice to
see them "up close and personal", as they all landed in a nearby pine and
allowed us to view them through the scope. We also had three Common Loons
and some Pied-billed Grebes at our first stop at the Conley Creek Access
area to Lake Rhodhiss.
We didn't really have a great variety of waterfowl--just your usual
assortment of PBG's, Coots and Mallards. We did, however, have one lone
Gadwall at Dusty Ridge Access on Lake Hickory. There were lots of
Ring-billed Gulls to go around and we saw them at most locations we checked.
Other birds of interest were the 5 Red-tails and one Sharp-shinned Hawk (who
was very cooperative and let us look at him through the scope). There were
all sorts of other passerines with Golden and Ruby Crowned Kinglets, Cedar
Waxwings, Brown-headed Nuthatches and Yellow-rumps being the most numerous.
