C Bird Count

if you ask me the real problem with the Christmas Bird Count is that too many
people are so keen on finding unusual species or the highest number of species
that they miss the whole purpose of a census. It would be like the US Census
takers running around making sure they had at least one person in every age
bracket, every financial bracket, and so on just to show some diversity and
then not trying to figure out the actual populations of each group. What good
would that be? I 'm sure most people take the count a little more seriously
than that, but I know there are some who are more interested in species numbers
than in populations. Marilyn Westphal/Hendersonville
