Short-eared Owls - Cape Hatteras National Seashore

At dusk Tuesday evening, 12/14/99, I saw 5 Short-eared Owls on Bodie Island.
All five owls were within one-half mile distance of each other, from 3.3 -3.8
miles south of Whalebone Junction on HWY 12. One owl was hunting on the east
side of HWY12 between the road and South Nags Head and eventually hunted the
grassy corridor of HWY12 50-60 yards in front of us, then flew back over the
western marshes. Two perched birds were spotted several hundred yards off the
road in the marshes while another flew among these perched birds. From the
concentration of owls in this area, I would guess that many more are around the
area. However, this area of Bodie Island offers great views of the marshes and
shrub scrub habitats where the owls roost and hunt.
