Here's an update on the waterfowl picture in southern Wake County. I
believe directions and information on each location, with the exception of
Greenview, are available at Will's website
(http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/tbg/wake.html).
NCSU Dairy Pond: 27 Northern Shoveler, 13 Bufflehead, 10 Lesser Scaup, 1
Ring-neck, 220 Canada Geese
Lake Wheeler: 70 Ruddy Ducks, 3 Bufflehead (CBC counters, don't be too
alarmed at the stinky smell coming from the peninsula near the Penny Rd.
causeway, seems some folks acquired a deer or two for which they had no
further use. They decided this would be a nice place to leave them :-(
Greenview Pond: 2 Tundra Swans, 11 Ring-necks, probably more but I was
mainly checking to see if the swans were still present. I'm sure the lucky
Raleigh CBC counter that has Greenview will enjoy this addition to their
list.
West Lake Pond (The big winner as usual): 400+ Ring-necked Ducks (They
were moving around a bit to much to get a precise count, 400 is a
conservative number), 38 Canvasback, 32 American Wigeon, 1 Green-winged
Teal.
All told, 828 fowl. The nice part is you can hit all of these locations in
about an hour (or a lunch break, as the case may be :-)
