Here are the results for the Ninth Annual York/Rock Hill Christmas
Bird Count, conducted 12/18/99. There were 66 species seen, the third
highest number to date (72 species is the record).
However, the 1999 count had only 2,890 individuals--by far the
all-time lowest number of individuals (7,673 is average). This low
tally seems to bear out earlier, more anecdotal reports that there
may be fewer birds in the Carolina Piedmont this fall.
By far the most unusual bird was a Snow Bunting seen and photographed
at Ebenezer Landing by a three-person team. Also of interest were
three other "first-timers": Lesser Scaup, Blue-headed Vireo, Common
Yellowthroat. Noticeably absent were Common Grackle and other
blackbirds.
The last bird of the day was a Barred Owl perched at 5 pm on a
utility line at the very busy intersection of SC 5 and Heckle By-pass
in Rock Hill.
(All birds listed below have either been seen on the York/Rock Hill
count or might be reasonably expected for it.)
