"HUMMINGBIRD MORNINGS 2001"
Hummingbird enthusiasts in the Carolinas are in for a rare treat
this summer when they get "up close and personal" with some of the
smallest birds in the world.
In July and August 2001, educator/naturalist Bill Hilton Jr. will
present his ever-popular "Hummingbird Mornings," bird banding
demonstrations guaranteed to delight everyone from pre-schoolers to
senior citizens. All presentations in 2001 will be fund-raisers for
non-profits or schools in the Carolinas, including Allison Woods
Foundation (Statesville), Nursery Road Elementary School (Columbia),
RibbonWalk--Charlotte's Botanical Forest (Charlotte), and Audubon
Society of Forsyth County (Winston-Salem).
Hilton, executive director of Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural
History in York SC, is one of only about 60 researchers authorized by
the federal government to band hummingbirds. During each
presentation, Hilton will capture local Ruby-throated Hummingbirds
that abound at various Carolinas sites, band and release them
unharmed, and respond to audience questions about hummingbird
behavior and how to attract these tiny feathered jewels to your own
backyard.
At his primary study site at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural
History near York SC, Hilton has banded nearly 2,400 hummingbirds
since 1984. Many have returned in later years and two were recaptured
and released near Atlanta and in Mobile AL. Details about Hilton's
hummingbird research are on the Web site for "Operation RubyThroat:
The Hummingbird Project" at: http://www.rubythroat.org.
Here's the schedule for "Hummingbird Mornings 2001"
28-29 July--Allison Woods Foundation (Statesville)
11 August--Nursery Road Elementary School (Columbia)
17--RibbonWalk, Charlotte's Botanical Forest (Charlotte)
25-26--Audubon Society of Forsyth County (Historic Bethabara Park,
Winston-Salem)
All presentations are at 8:30 and 10:30 am with a $5 admission
charge. Door prizes will be awarded at most sites. Directions and
other information are available at www.rubythroat.org. Bring your
camera for what is sure to be a memorable experience for everyone who
attends.
