I agree with Sandy that we should not read too much into
this. I'm reminded of an anecdote I posted two years
ago, when I observed a Greater Yellowlegs snatch a
Semipalmated Sandpiper by the toe and lift it in the
air before releasing it. I suspect the yellowlegs was
just going along searching the mud when it suddenly
saw something that triggered a "that's a worm" reflex
and it responded. Probably something along those lines
happened with the Cardinal.
