Mexico has deposited its instrument of accession to the PCT on October 1, 1994, and will become bound by the PCT on January 1, 1995. Therefore, in any international application filed or after January 1, 1995, Mexico may be designated and, because it is bound by Chapter II of the PCT, may also be elected. Furthermore, as from January 1, 1995, nationals and residents of Mexico will be entitled to file international applications under the PCT. The country code for Mexico is "MX". Mexico is the first Spanish-speaking country of Latin America to accede to the PCT and the PCT hopes that this will encourage the other Spanish-speaking countries of the region to also accede to the Treaty.
