HIJMS SHOKAKU

Coupled with Zuikaku in the Fifth Carrier Division, Shokaku enjoyed much success in her part of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Damaged during the Battle of the Coral Sea, she was unable to be repaired in time for the "decisive" Battle of Midway, perhaps saving her from being turned into flaming wreckage as were four other Japanese carriers. On June 19, 1944, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Shokaku received 4 torpedoes fired from USS Cavalla. Engulfed in flames, she struggled to control the inferno until the fires reached her magazines, tearing her apart. Shokaku was the second-to-last carrier that participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor to be sunk.
