I&#8217;ve delighted in Eaton&#8217;s poetry for many years. His relaxed formalism and his subject matter which is at once refined and sensual has been not only a joy  but  a guide. I found his <a href=\"http:\/\/newcriterion.com\/archives\/poems\/10\/workofsun-eaton\/\">&#8220;Work of the Sun&#8221;<\/a> online tonight which while it does not show his favorite form &#8212; long relaxed lines rhyming in surprising ways &#8212; demonstrates much of his pleasures (and ours).<\/p>\n<p>The first stanza of <em>The Work of the Sun<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Verlaine said the poem slowly rises like the sun,<br \/>\nSpreads over the landscape, a bird that hovers,<br \/>\nMoves on to find and bless a pair of lovers:<br \/>\nThe work of the sun is never done. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapelhillnews.com\/obituaries\/story\/2918434p-9367434c.html\">Charles Edward Eaton Obit in Chapel Hill News.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just learned that Charles Edward Eaton has died at age 89.
