{"id":145,"date":"2004-12-10T23:30:13","date_gmt":"2004-12-11T03:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=145"},"modified":"2004-12-12T09:34:39","modified_gmt":"2004-12-12T13:34:39","slug":"the-friendly-face-of-slavery-in-cary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/pjones\/blog\/the-friendly-face-of-slavery-in-cary\/","title":{"rendered":"The Friendly Face of Slavery in Cary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is particularly sad to me to see the word &#8220;Christian&#8221; used to defend aborrant ideas that at particularly un-Christ-like. <a href=\"http:\/\/carychristianschool.org\/NewsAndEvents\/default.cfm\">The Cary Christian School<\/a> is, sadly, one such case. The School selected a pamphlet called, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/188576717X\/\">&#8220;Southern Slavery, As It Was&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christkirk.com\/\">Douglas Wilson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/intel\/intelreport\/article.jsp?sid=254\">Steve Wilkins.<\/a> The book explains the relationship of slavery to Southern pride (pride not being a sin in this case) by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canonpress.org\/pages\/culture.asp#southern\">&#8220;attempting to correct the gross slanders of that culture&#8221;<\/a>. The book goes on to tell how slavery &#8220;was a relationship based upon mutual affection and confidence.&#8221; Then there are the parts about how slavery is related it Roe v. Wade. If you have doubts, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/reader\/188576717X\/ref=sib_dp_pt\/102-4996908-7103315#reader-page\">look inside the book (thanks Amazon)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The School, which says <a href=\"http:\/\/carychristianschool.org\/Philosophy\/ClassicalEducation.htm\">that it&#8217;s philosophy is based on another book by Wilson<\/a>, first defended the book, but has now pulled the text and apologized, sort of, &#8220;We apologize for this oversight and covet your prayers for our school.&#8221; Further the pamphlet while still listed at Wilson&#8217;s Canon Press website and on Amazon has vanished from print &#8212; because of either &#8220;faulty footnotes and citation errors&#8221; according to the School or &#8220;Southern Slavery will be out of print for several months&#8221; according to Canon Press.<br \/>\nObviously the School and even Wilson are embarassed by the 1996 book, but not enough<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2004\/12\/9\/171831\/355\">Kos reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Wilson&#8217;s Association of Classical and Christian Schools accredited Cary Christian, and he is scheduled to speak at the school&#8217;s graduation in May. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and what about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dixienet.org\/ls-bod\/wilkins.html\">Steven Wilkins<\/a>? He&#8217;s a National Director of the League of the South, a neo-Confederate organization classed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/intel\/intelreport\/article.jsp?aid=158\"> Read what he had to say about 911.<\/a><br \/>\nBut to see the long history and direction of Wilson and of Wilkins, read the SPLC report called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/intel\/intelreport\/article.jsp?pid=645\">&#8220;Taliban on the Palouse?
