We usually don&#8217;t live to know whether we&#8217;ve accomplished that. But e-mail today gave me some hope and confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980, I won or was finalist in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldmountain.appstate.edu\/\">The Cold Mountain Review<\/a> Poetry Contest. As a result, I was invited to Boone, NC and to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appstate.edu\">Appalachian State University<\/a> for a dinner, a panel and a reading and later, as was the style of the period, late night drinking.<\/p>\n<p>I met the editors, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.wlu.edu\/news\/page\/normal\/1533.html\">R. T. Smith<\/a> (now at <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.wlu.edu\/\">Washington and Lee University<\/a> editing <a href=\"http:\/\/shenandoah.wlu.edu\/\">Shenandoah<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Frazier\">Charles Frazier<\/a> (later known as the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cold_Mountain_%28novel%29\">Cold Mountain<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thirteen_Moons_%28novel%29\">Thirteen Moons<\/a>). I was even more amazed that the home of the Department Head (I think) who hosted the late night party had central vacuum connections. Little portals that suck in each room. Much delight was obtained.<\/p>\n<p>Now 27 years later the poem that took me up the mountain, <em>&#8220;Feet,&#8221;<\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/ibiblio.org\/pjones\/poetry\/feet.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\">JPG of the poem<\/a>] has been selected by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldmountain.appstate.edu\/Bathanti_guest.html\">35th anniversary issue editor Joseph Bathanti<\/a> to represent 1980.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks, Joe and Rod and Charles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every poet aspires to write at least one poem that someone will remember and think good after a number of years.
