{"id":2088,"date":"2007-05-07T16:46:47","date_gmt":"2007-05-07T21:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ibiblio.org\/pjones\/wordpress\/?p=2088"},"modified":"2007-05-07T16:46:47","modified_gmt":"2007-05-07T21:46:47","slug":"second-life-croquet-alice-avr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/pjones\/blog\/second-life-croquet-alice-avr\/","title":{"rendered":"Second Life, Croquet, Alice, AVR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m back from the first day of<a href=\"https:\/\/www-927.ibm.com\/ibm\/cas\/conferences\/ICVCI\/index.jsp\"> IBM University Days<\/a> where a lot of attention, in fact the conference theme, is on <a href=\"http:\/\/vcl.ncsu.edu\/\">NCSU&#8217;s Virtual  Computing Initiative.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But there were two different presentations on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Life\">Second Life<\/a> alternatives and neither of them <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Croquet_project\">Croquet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One on <a href=\"http:\/\/alice.org\">ALICE, which is a 3D Authoring system, from the Stage3 Research Group at Carnegie Mellon University<\/a>. The presentation by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.duke.edu\/~rodger\/\">Susan Rodger of Duke<\/a> was about using ALICE for t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.duke.edu\/csed\/alice\/\">eaching programming (via a little stealth) to K-12 and to non-CS majors at Duke<\/a>. Overall it&#8217;s a smart environment that you can download and run locally. ALICE is in a partnership with Electronic Arts (you know them as the SIMS people). This partnership greatly improves the images of people in the Alice worlds &#8212; they can now look as good as SIMS people.<\/p>\n<p>The second by Moha Tabrizi of East Carolina, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecu.edu\/cs-admin\/news\/releases\/2005\/11\/120505tabrizi.cfm\">His virtualization, his Agent Virtual Reality is achieved by placing sensors all over his body thusly<\/a> and interacting in real time in a virtual environment for distance education. No keyboarding necessary! He is his own avatar! Oddly Dr. Tabrizi was unfamiliar with Second Life and Croquet.<\/p>\n<p>There was an interested discussion\/rant by Ethan Zuckerman with\/at Charlie Nesson at Berkman Center on SL and Croquet among other things back in December. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T_akmmr0ReI\">Here&#8217;s the video of Zukerman expressing distrust of SL (&#8220;a privately held company that has build their empire on real estate and porn&#8221;) and his interest in Brewster and Open Content Initiative and his slander of the French &#8212; in short a great 10 minutes.<\/a> (thanks to Nassib for pointing this one out).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m back from the first day of IBM University Days where a lot of attention, in fact the conference theme, is on NCSU&#8217;s Virtual Computing Initiative.
