It was cold, after a week over over 70 degree weather. Freezing in fact. But the spirits were high and the speeches were full of fire. Although my toes were pretty cold (note to self: wear weather appropriate shoes next year), I was mostly warm. Children hid out in the Post Office lobby til they were needed or needed to march.<br \/>\nThe growing crowd then marched to the Baptist Church almost in Carrboro where several hours of singing and speaking awaited them.<br \/>\nTucker and I had other appointments and so took a warm up cup of coffee with <a href=\"http:\/\/indyweek.com\/durham\/2001-11-28\/cover5.html\">Carrboro Alderman Mark Chilton<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/audioactivism.org\">AudioActivism&#8217;s Brian Russell<\/a> at the new 3 Cups. Mark reminded me of <a href=\"http:\/\/athena.english.vt.edu\/~appalach\/writersA\/ehle.html\">John Ehle<\/a>&#8216;s book, <em>The Free Men<\/em>, (Harper &#038; Row, 1965) about the local Civil Rights struggle and the people involved. Then we speed walked back to our car.<br \/>\nThe march went within sight of the soon-to-be Martin Luther King Blvd. Sally worked hard on that project and <a href=\"http:\/\/greenespace.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/fellow-travelers.html\">has written a lot<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sallygreene.org\/hayden.htm\">about it<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/greenespace.blogspot.com\/2004\/11\/street-should-be-named-for-local-hero.html\">on her blog<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sallygreene.org\/mlk.htm\">on her site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/greenespace.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/mlk-day-in-chapel-hill.html\">Sally has posted her talk and her impressions on her blog.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taking the day off for MLK Day celebrations, Sally was one of the folks asked to speak this morning at the pre-march rally at 9:30.
