{"id":2847,"date":"2009-06-25T10:36:39","date_gmt":"2009-06-25T15:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ibiblio.org\/pjones\/blog\/?p=2847"},"modified":"2009-06-28T21:23:54","modified_gmt":"2009-06-29T02:23:54","slug":"jones-mania-local-editions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/pjones\/blog\/jones-mania-local-editions\/","title":{"rendered":"Jones-mania: national and local editions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did quite a bit of talking with Vadim Lavrusik for a fairly long article on <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2009\/06\/19\/teaching-social-media\/\">&#8220;10 Ways Journalism Schools Are Teaching Social Media&#8221;<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\">Mashable<\/a> which also features Jay Rosen, Jeff Jarvis, Sree Sreenivasan, and a couple of others. Very good company and some very good ideas for teaching.<\/p>\n<p>More locally,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytarheel.com\/\"> The Daily Tar Heel<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytarheel.com\/news\/university\/unc-health-care-tweets-live-surgery-1.1769151\">a nice story about how UNC Health Care has been using Twitter<\/a> including their tweets during a surgery (Note: the DTH calls this &#8220;live surgery&#8221; as opposed to &#8220;dead surgery&#8221;? Isn&#8217;t that an autopsy?). I get a couple of expert lines which are slightly on topic. Basically I describe a &#8220;thick tweet&#8221; here: &#8220;Jones said the ingredients to an appealing update include mentioning someone else, featuring a link and adding a picture or video.&#8221; And I state the completely obvious: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Paul Jones, a journalism professor at UNC who has one of the most followed Twitter accounts in the Chapel Hill area, said gaining followers on the site requires posts that grab readers\u2019 attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep adding value, give people a reason to follow you,\u201d he said. \u201cThe only people who will follow you are the people who want it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On another Twitter front, I did a little bit &#8212; not sure how much will be used &#8212; for<a href=\"http:\/\/1360wchl.com\/\"> WCHL<\/a> about Twitter and Iran. <a href=\"http:\/\/1360wchl.com\/details.html?id=10852\">In the parts selected<\/a> I talk about how Twitter is difficult to block because it can be sent by cell, SMS, satphone, or a variety of internet protocols and interfaces (I did point out that the WTO protesters were hit with a total communications black out somewhat successfully) and later I talk about the social contract between social network service providers and their users and how users are free to leave and often do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did quite a bit of talking with Vadim Lavrusik for a fairly long article on &#8220;10 Ways Journalism Schools Are Teaching Social Media&#8221; in Mashable which also features Jay Rosen, Jeff Jarvis, Sree Sreenivasan, and a couple of others.
