{"id":3122,"date":"2011-04-11T22:14:37","date_gmt":"2011-04-12T03:14:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ibiblio.org\/pjones\/blog\/?p=3122"},"modified":"2011-04-11T22:14:37","modified_gmt":"2011-04-12T03:14:37","slug":"internet-addiction-not-one-year-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/pjones\/blog\/internet-addiction-not-one-year-later\/","title":{"rendered":"Internet Addiction &#8211; Not : One Year Later"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About a year after a poorly researched piece <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/07\/technology\/07brainside.html\">by Tara Parker-Pope on Internet Addiction<\/a> in the Science Times section of the NY Times, a more perceptive and better researched piece <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/09\/miss-g-a-case-of-internet-addiction\/?ref=opinion\">by Virginia Heffernan appeared in the Opinion Pages today. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Heffernan quickly identifies Kimberly Young as what sociologists would call a &#8220;Moral Entrepreneur&#8221; only slightly removed from con man Harold Hill of the Music Man. Hill sells his 76 trombone remedy to River City as a cure all but in particular a cure for the folk devil &#8212; pool (We got trouble right here in River City). Then Heffernan points out the differences between passions, interests, habits and addictions through the story of steampunk Gabriela.<\/p>\n<p>About a year ago, I did a talk not unlike Heffernan&#8217;s for the Morehead Science Center (slides below).
