In fact, phones (28%) plus emails (23%) account for most of the workplace distractions with &#8220;toggling between activities&#8221; is tied with &#8220;talking with co-workers&#8221; at 10% each. <\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1753935\/i-cant-get-my-work-done-a-new-industry-survey-looks-at-workplace-distractions\">harmon.ie spins the data this way<\/a>: <em>&#8220;The majority (57%) of work interruptions now involve either using collaboration and social tools like email, social networks, text messaging and IM, or switching windows among disparate standalone tools and applications&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yet while most companies (68%) and an even higher percent of individuals (73%) have each added techniques to help maintain focus and minimize distractions, there is little evidence that the same policies attack telephone distractions &#8212; the worst.<\/p>\n<p>Reminds me that I&#8217;ve always found these final lines of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poem\/178058\">Philip Larkin&#8217;s poem <em>Aubade<\/em><\/a> especially chilling:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Meanwhile telephones crouch, getting ready to ring<br \/>\nIn locked-up offices, and all the uncaring<br \/>\nIntricate rented world begins to rouse.<br \/>\nThe sky is white as clay, with no sun.<br \/>\nWork has to be done.<br \/>\nPostmen like doctors go from house to house.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mhanlen1\/3110350\/\" title=\"The Office Phone by mhanlen1, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/2\/3110350_de8d75270e_t.jpg\" width=\"100\" height=\"75\" alt=\"The Office Phone\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ed Huff comments on Facebook that&#8211;as my image caption to the graph posted in the article below also points out about the harmon.ie report&#8211;Phone calls are more distracting than email or social media.
