{"id":630,"date":"2005-07-10T20:44:06","date_gmt":"2005-07-11T01:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ibiblio.org\/pjones\/wordpress\/?p=630"},"modified":"2005-07-12T15:36:17","modified_gmt":"2005-07-12T20:36:17","slug":"confusion-of-names-laurel-and-ivy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/pjones\/blog\/confusion-of-names-laurel-and-ivy\/","title":{"rendered":"Confusion of Names: Laurel and Ivy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lost a bet of a sort over local mountain terms for plants this weekend whilst up in Ashe County (Note: Ashe County is a long ways from Asheville but both are in the NC mountains).<br \/>\nOur host claimed that what we call &#8220;laurel&#8221; is called &#8220;ivy&#8221; and what we call &#8220;Rhodendron&#8221; is called &#8220;laurel.&#8221; Seemed to wrong to let pass.<br \/>\nBut when we checked with the highest possible authority &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0807829331\/\">C. Richie Bell&#8217;s Wild Flowers of North Carolina.<\/a> We found he was right.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grandfather.com\/scenery\/wildflower-gallery\/laurel.htm\">Mountain Laurel aka <em>Kalmia latifolia<\/em> is widely called Ivy<\/a> and <em>Rhododendron maximum<\/em> is known as Great Laurel. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museum.appstate.edu\/kimmem\/2002\/rhododendron\/pages\/rhodo.shtml\">The pink to red or purple flowered <em>Rhododendron catawbiense<\/em> is still called Rhododendron,<\/a> but both Rhodos are some times called Rosebay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lost a bet of a sort over local mountain terms for plants this weekend whilst up in Ashe County (Note: Ashe County is a long ways from Asheville but both are in the NC mountains).
