{"id":94,"date":"2004-11-03T10:28:28","date_gmt":"2004-11-03T14:28:28","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=94"},"modified":"2004-11-12T17:25:26","modified_gmt":"2004-11-12T21:25:26","slug":"diebold-in-ohio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/pjones\/blog\/diebold-in-ohio\/","title":{"rendered":"Diebold in Ohio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Could it be that one reason that the Kerry folks aren&#8217;t conceding Ohio (yet) is that there is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/commentary\/columns\/2004\/03\/03_200.html\">another story waiting there to be told?<\/a> Voting machine maker Ohio-based Diebold has been all over the news for the past year drawing the attention of the SEC and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/news\/plaindealer\/index.ssf?\/base\/news\/1086687227191651.xml\">of Ohio papers<\/a> ever since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diebold.com\/whatsnews\/inthenews\/executive.htm\">Diebold Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Walden O&#8217;Dell <\/a>&#8220;committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes for the president&#8221; in an August 2003 fund-raising letter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/it.slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=04\/09\/24\/2046234\">As computer security folks have noticed &#8212; and this concerns me much more &#8211;,<\/a> Diebold&#8217;s other side has been to <a href=\"http:\/\/yro.slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=04\/10\/01\/1225227\">attack those who point out flaws in the voting machine integrity.<\/a> In doing so, <a href=\"http:\/\/magic-city-news.com\/article_2276.shtml\">Diebold was found to have strongly overreached their copyright monopoly rights and was fined $125K.<\/a> So even without the questionable political ethics, <a href=\"http:\/\/quote.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=10000103&#038;sid=aP3CJb9ADeXM&#038;refer=us\">Diebold voting machines cast a shadow on the elections<\/a> this year and possibly in the future. This last is reason for concern for both Republicans and Democrats as security flaws can be exploited by partisons and\/or criminals with or without political affiliation.<br \/>\nIf this long recount gives us a more open and more secure method of electronic voting, the wait and investigation will be worth it in securing democracy&#8217;s future. <a href=\"http:\/\/verifiedvoting.org\/\">Verified Voting Foundation<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eff.org\">Electronic Frontier Foundation <\/a>are among the organizations on the case. And <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Secret_ballot\">the country that invented secret ballots<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/news\/ebiz\/0,1272,61045,00.html\">knows how to get eVoting done right.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/news\/evote\/\">More eVoting news in Wired.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> Slashdot has this story on the subject <a href=\"http:\/\/politics.slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=04\/11\/03\/1815227\">&#8220;Blackboxvoting.org Raises Vote-Audit FOIA Request&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> UPDATE:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newbernsj.com\/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=\/GlobalTemplates\/Details.cfm&#038;StoryID=18297&#038;Section=Local\">eVoting loses votes in North Carolina!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wishtv.com\/Global\/story.asp?S=1647611\">WISH-TV questions Indiana votes in interview with ES&#038;S<\/a> &#8212; the company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillnews.com\/news\/012903\/hagel.aspx\">formerly headed by surprise Senator Hagel of Nebraska.<\/a> Among the nuggets in the interview: &#8221; An investigation by the Palm Beach Post revealed ES&#038;S had a secret agreement to kick back a percentage of its profits to the Florida Association of Counties.&#8221; and &#8220;The investigation also found that the lobbyist representing both ES&#038;S and the Florida Association of Counties was Sandra Mortham, a former Florida secretary of state and former running mate of Gov. Jeb Bush.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/apnews.myway.com\/article\/20041105\/D865R1DO0.html\">Bush gets 4,258 votes out of only 638 votes cast in Ohio precinct AP reports.
