I&#8217;ve also assigned H. G. Wells&#8217; earlier (1937) <a href=\"http:\/\/sherlock.berkeley.edu\/wells\/world_brain.html\">&#8220;World Brain&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sims.berkeley.edu\/%7Ebuckland\/goldbush.html\">Michael Buckland&#8217;s article<\/a> on the near forgotten inventor of a pre-Memex Memex, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeisshistorica.org\/goldberg.html\">Emanuel Goldberg<\/a>, who had most all of what Bush dreamed of already working in the 1920s.<br \/>\nTo my mind, Wells better grasped the potential social use of shared knowledge than Bush, while Goldberg operationalized the Memex concepts so much earlier (and I would say from most of my background readings better) than Bush.<\/p>\n<p>My journalism collegue <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jomc.unc.edu\/directories\/faculty\/lauder.html\">Val Lauder<\/a> sends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2006\/WORLD\/europe\/01\/17\/uk.parrot\/index.html\">a story about a too observant feathered biorecorder<\/a> that somehow seems to relate. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In class today, we&#8217;ll be talking about &#8220;As We May Think,&#8221; Vanevar Bush&#8217;s 1945 Atlantic Monthly article.
