hunkered in trees he calls to me
'daddy see me,' I see him in trees;
he is before me
roosting in the holly, gleaning vermillion berries,
still in the magnolia, stalking tent caterpillers;
my eyes settle on him like pollen on a leaf,
rain on the skin of the sea
my brooding three year's son
a figure of the leaf and bough
skulking two-toed cuckoo in the hickory
who looms in trees
weaves of coppice and cornea
vision;
he is before me
conjuring faraway hemlocks, summoning silent pines,
a private treetop where a small boy sulks,
I see him in trees, my seeing of him.
