I've given up.  I don't really care.  I'll patch my kernel and run
KGI/GGI-console and produce (or just help Charles) Debian kernel packages 
for it when it's ready.  Users can make their own choices as to whether
to run the mainstream kernel or KGI.  I'm not even considering writing
any kgicon drivers at this point.

P.S. For those who aren't following ggi-kgi, I've made some progress
adapting KGI to use the experimental linux-input drivers.  As soon as Steffen
resurfaces, you may see a KGI 0.10 that will give X a mouse device
to work with -- which leaves only console text selection to go before
it will be comfortable to use.
