Lloyd Mac Donald asks about stopping the growth of
an amarylis and over-wintering the bulb in the dark.

My wife, who knows bulbs fairly well, says that she
thinks the amarylis bulbs would probably over-winter
O.K. in a paper bag if you did it AFTER the foliage
went over. The foliage first needs to make the plant
sugars that are stored in the over-wintering bulb.
"Stopping" the growth before the amarylis has made
all of the plant sugars would probably do it in.
