Bob in Bequia asks for thoughts on eucalyptus trees.

The Sunset Western Garden Book makes the comment
that most of the eucalyptus trees are native to
Australia and were first planted in California in
1856. Someone then got the idea that they had great
commercial potential and they started to plant
thousands of acres of these things. They are still
all over many parts of Southern California.

They were pest free until 1984 when the eucalyptus
longhorn beetle showed up from Australia and there
have been problems ever since. There is now a lerp
that is causing problems as well.

We had used a number of different eucalyptus trees
as street trees here in Sierra Madre, California and
they had worked reasonably well but on-going pest
problems have now caused us to use other trees.
