For what its worth. . . I think the better answer for "poor,
compacted soil" infested with weeds is simple hand weeding
followed by putting down a generous (about 2") layer of compost
as a mulch. I wouldn't dig it in. I'd let the material just work
its way into the soil as I continued to weed and weed and weed
until the patch was clean.
