Subject: corn stalks

This is my first year growing corn. The center stalks are green and
healthy, but the leaves (do you call them leaves? the frond-like things
that stick out and collect sunlight?) Anyhow the 'leaves' have thin,
dry lines along the veins, as if something is eating them, but I can't
find a single insect on them. Is this normal for corn, or is there an
unseen pest?

Also, a secondary issue: I keep hearing vague comments that corn has
special issues with regard to pollination. That you have to have both
male/female plants, you have to hand-pollinate, etc. I have six stalks,
and three of them are already have ears. Does anyone have the
authoritative answer on this?

Thanks,
Jeff
