started vermicomposting as a novice about two years ago and haven't had any
problems. Are you keeping it moist and feeding them adequately? Is the bedding
deep enough for the worms to retreat if the top layer gets too hot? Post some
more detail about your experience and maybe we can help. >>
They were the redworms used for composting and I did it in a variety of ways :
) First, I over-fed the "test worms" that I bought at a local bait store.
Then, I had a "watermellon disaster" as my son put an entire watermelon into
the bin, which promptly melted and drowned more than half the worms. Then,
once I got the feeding schedule down pat, I had a huge problem with flies. I
realized that I didn't have enough bedding and for some reason, I was feeding
on top instead of burrying the food. Worked that out and then the final blow
was the terrible storms we just had. The covering tent blew off my deck and
when I realized that my worm bin was no longer shaded the next day, it was too
late. My worms were cooked.
I bought some new worms which arrived today, but there was a problem with them.
The bag that they were shipped in broke and most of the moisture was lost.
Many were dead and many were barely alive but very dried out. Not sure if they
will make it or not. I put them in a small container of new bedding which I'm
leaving in the kitchen overnight. Tomorrow I'll add whatever is left to my new
worm bin.
Glad to hear that your vermicomposting is going well. I felt like I did a lot
of research but I guess I needed more. What kind of system do you use? Do you
have an insect problem?
