Carolina asks about the use of bats to control bugs in the
garden. . . .saying that she has "too many bugs".
There is a good article on bats, ways to attract and manage
bats, and how bats can be used in the garden to manage pests in
"Common-Sense Pest Control" by Olkowski, Daar, and Olkowski.
A class member used bats in her garden and she said that the
trick is to have the bat house high and away from any structures
and from the foliage of any trees. She has since decided that
they didn't help all that much.
Most of the insects in a garden are beneficial and. in the long
run, the ecosystem of the garden will re-establish a balance
to correct, "too many bugs" PROVIDED that the garden is well
tended and the garden environment is not rendered toxic by
toxic materials.
