I live in an area where the bat population has diminished over the past
decade, in spite of the fact that there is abundant bat-friendly space (an
abandoned barn, hundreds of acres of pesticide-free woods, lots of
mosquitoes, etc.).
While bat boxes may help eventually, may I suggest you also make your space
friendly to birds, garden snakes, toads, dragon flies, ladybugs, moles, etc.
In order to do this, you have to provide appropriate hidey-holes, bird
baths, bug baths (I keep saucers at ground level to collect rainwater for
the predators to drink)...Most importantly, you must NOT USE ANY PESTICIDES.
A few patches of native wildflowers/weeds/shrubs also encourage a balance in
the yard.
Good luck,
donna
