I think this is personal preference. I use the Earth Machines (look like
upside-down garbage cans) for kitchen scraps and freestanding "cakes" for
leaves and brush. I got a good deal on the bins, but in the future, I'd
probably just cut the bottom off a few garbage cans and cut some vents. Now
that I'm experienced composting, I see that the container does not make much
difference. It's really about the mix and maintenance of the piles. About
accelerators, I would not pay money for them. Chicken manure (I have
chickens), urine, and grass clippings work well. I did buy some alfalfa meal
once, but I ended up using it as mulch after I pulled up some summer plants.
I'll till it in in the spring.
