Roger asks how to get rid of ivy in a friendly manner.

I think the best way to do that is by simply hand weeding.
We did a write-up on weeding that is on the FAQ at
http://metalab.unc.edu/rge .I did another for the
Victorian Rose Garden at the Los Angeles County Arboretum
at http://www.victorian-rose.org/Pests/Weeding.htm which
also shows a picture of one of the better tools. The
trick, if there is one, is to use a very sharp weeder and
to do multiple weedings.

Here in Southern California where things grow relatively fast,
it seems to work best to allow about 2 weeks between the first
and second weeding. It's really hard to try to get every bit of
root in one shot.
